FW: Making a K2/100 Cleaner

Dan Barker
You don't describe the test setup in any detail, but I'd first question the
possibility of overdriving some component in the test setup. Any piece of
equipment in the chain being overdriven will horribly and unpredictably skew
the results.

Dan / WG4S / K2 #2456

<snip>
The TS850 was cleaner, by roughly 15 dB, than the K2/100.

I thought I did that rather well, but I'll repeat it. Radio to
mechanical switch to antenna, each using its own antenna tuner,
indicated match 1:1. HP8590D with short piece of wire attached.
Clearly not being overloaded. Both radios transmitting 100 watts on
the same frequency, producing equal levels at the HP8590D. My first
thought was, back off the power on the K2. No change in the relative
level of the sidebands -- that is, they came down the same number of
dB as the carrier.

Jim

K2 #1833 loaded with options for sale $350

aa7jc
I am going to offer my existing K2 so that I can order a new one (got the
bug to build again).  I dont need two K2s..
This would make a great camping rig.  I just need $350 plus shipping payed
via paypal

K2 #1833
KSB2 SSB Option
K160RX 160M Option
KIO2 RS-232 Interface (not working)
KAF2 Audio Filter with RTC
KNB2 Noise Blanker
KAT2 20W Internal ATU

The mic jack is wired for the Heil hand mic that Elecraft used to sell (that
I am keeping)..  Every time I used SSB with this rig I got excellent audio
reports.  99% of the time this rig was used for CW.  The autotuner works
incredibly well

The K2 is cosmetically near perfect.. the only flaws I can see is that one
of the four front panel "5-56" screws is missing and the main tuning know
has some silver showing on it's front.

The unit works extremely well but there are a few fixable issues.
=================================================================
1.  There seems to occasionally be some minor switch bounce issues with some
of the front panel switches.

2.  The RS232 is not working at all.  It worked well for a long time.. then
it quit.. I never tried to debug it.

3.  I don't operate 160 meters and I just bought that option so that I could
use the seperate rcv ant function.. So I never tuned it up down there.

4.  The speaker works OK most of the time but it's magnet crimps the voice
coil making it sound tinny at times (very common problem among many K2s)
