FW: [N1MM] FSK problems on K3 radio

Chester Alderman
This is a copy of a message I just posted on the N1MM Logger reflector. This
is not just an N1MM problem because I tried MMTTY 1.64G stand-alone program
and had the same results. If anyone has any experience/helpful suggestion as
to how to fix this, your input would be greatly appreciated. I did spend
several hours going through my user's manual searching for help, but that
was not fruitful.

Thanks and 73,

Tom - W4BQF

Subject: [N1MM] FSK problems on K3 radio

Win 7 Pro 64-bit
N1MM v 11.01.01
MMTTY 1.64G
K3 radio

CONFIG:Hardware
COM 3: Radio Control - DTR set to Always OFF - RTS set to PTT
COM1: Digital checked - DTR set to Always OFF / RTS set to Always OFF
EXTFSK: Set to COM 1 - FSK = TxD / PTT = DTR

K3 CONFIG: PTT-KEY  RTS - OFF  (but I later found out it does not matter how
this is set!)

N1MM and MMTTY transmits the messages fine; any macro is sent correctly and
while sending, I can hear the audio (dittles). The problem is that once the
macro is completed and sends the command to switch to receive, the K3 does
not produce any audio. I have read N1MM's documentation on the K3 and pretty
well followed the section titled 'Option 2', but after about six hours I
have run out of things to try.

All I need is to get the K3 to return to receive mode, and I am aware of the
possible "key-down" condition mentioned  in the Option 2 document.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

73,

Tom - W4BQF

Re: FW: [N1MM] FSK problems on K3 radio

Richard Ferch
Tom,

I have had this "stuck in transmit" happen to me a number of times, most
recently just yesterday when I was playing with various settings while
checking out a configuration problem for another N1MM user. I have also
encountered several similar cases on user groups, not only for N1MM
Logger but also for the DXLabs software suite.

The common thread in all of these problem reports appears to be that
when the "stuck in transmit" problem happened, there were two methods of
PTT control being used at once. For example, a user may have been using
PTT via software command over the serial link (TX; and RX; commands) in
parallel with a hardware PTT connection (either to the K3's PTT IN jack,
to the AUX connector, or using RTS on the RS232 port). Whenever this
problem has happened to me, I have always found that I had two parallel
PTT methods configured.

In every such case that I am aware of, disabling all but one of the PTT
methods has always solved the problem. It looks to me as if you have a
hardware PTT connection from DTR on COM1 - at least, that is how you
have EXTFSK configured. If so, that is the only PTT method you need. In
the N1MM Configurer for COM3, is the "Radio PTT via command" check box
checked? If so, try unchecking it to see if that solves the problem.
