Filter and DSP

Ron Midwin

I have a K-3 with the 5 pole 2.7 KHz filter, and the 400 Hz 8 pole for cw.

I am considering getting either a 1.8 or 2.1 KHz additional filter for QRM.

My question is, the 1.8 would seem a better choice for rejecting QRM from a
station 2 KHz away, but what about how it sounds to listen to?

Has anyone done a comparison between 1.8 and 2.1 filters, plus playing with
the DSP?

Ron,

You ask a question that is quite subjective and each will have an opinion.
However, since you already have a K3, you can evaluate the 'how it
sounds' question with your own K3.
Just use the WIDTH control to narrow the SSB response to 2.1 kHz (you
may have to move the SHIFT to maximize intelligibility) - listen for a
while and then try the 1.8 width the same way.
The roofing filter will sound about the same as you obtain with the DSP,
but the roofing filter will keep the Hardware AGC from reacting to
extremely strong near-in signals - that is the benefit of the roofing
filter.
