First KX1 QSO

William Shappley
I guess I'll call it "The Golden QSO", hi hi. I just completed and
brought to life KX1 serial number 00702 last weekend.  Tonight was the
first chance I've had to sit down and work some QRP.  So, I hooked up to
my station dipole, plugged in my gel-cell, put on the headphones, and
tuned around.

I tried 40 meters first, but it was crowded, noisy and just standard
nighttime 40 meters.  So, up to 20.  Find an unused freq, let the little
autotuner do it's thing, swr reports 1.0 at 3 watts out.
A little tuning around, and I hear SM3DBU on 14.061.  No one else came
back to him, so I sent out my call, and wham!  My call comes back at me,
along with a 589 sig report.  From Sweden.  To middle Tennessee.  Using
3 watts.  On a dipole up 30 feet.

I told him I would QSL via the buro, but I'm going to send this one
direct.  I want something in my hand when I tell my big fish story to my
friends.

Next, I guess I'll go throw 25 feet of wire over a tree limb and look
for JA calls, hi hi!  I think anything is possible!

Super Bill!

It demonstrates just how well a very small effective radiated power will do
when you hang around the edge of the maximum usable frequency.

Of course, at 30 feet your dipole is at an ideal height for 20. You get a
lot of gain from the ground reflection for low-angle lobes at about 1/2 wave
up (appx. 30 feet on 20). That can be 5 or 6 dB - a full  S-Unit or more -
over a vertical in the favored directions.
