Well folks, finally after 2 months wait my boomset from Yamaha, arrived this afternoon.
It look and feel very professional, the headset is big enough to cover my ears completeley,it isolate me from the outside world, they feel confortable. When I plug it into my K3 front panel phones jack,my first impression was WOW!! this sound great, for years I was using the Sony MDR-V150 that are sold in local audio stores for $20 and I thougt they were the best in the market, they really sound wonderful with any radio but these Yamaha leaves in the dust my old Sony, the audio quality is awsome,if you hear AM broadcast stations the "lows" are deep solid without any distorsion, even on ESSB If you find some one transmitting that wide, you enjoy that sweet sound. Now comes the mic,it needs 3V DC power,it comes with a little plastic case where you insert a couple of AAA batteries to feed the mic, then I connected it to the rear mic input and trough the quick config menu set it to "rPH" and bingo, nice TX audio, the gain is much higher than any of all the mics I have been using with my K3,so I had to lower the mic gain to just 10 and comp to same level,VOX works very easy with this mic,I set lastly the mic EQ and my audio goes very well balanced from 100 to 3000 hz. Its 00:30 UTC in SE FL now,I am on 40M if anyone will like to hear me on the air with it I will be available all night, just send me a direct email. I can tell that for just $38 this is a great investment that will put Heil to think about how to improve their mics or at least make them more afordable. If you have not order one of these, don't hesitate,do it. Hector,
Glad you like it. I have been using mine for months. But with the K3 rear input, you do not need the battery bias box. The K3 will supply the bias you need. I just received my CM-500s and am using the rear mic jack. Works fine that
way with lo gain, bias on. As Jim reported, the mic has a lot of gain. It's quite bassy compared to the Heil but the EQ takes care of that. I opened the package and 10 minutes later I'm all set. The ear pieces are nice and large. Comfy so far. yes Bob,very confortable,I have been dxing and ragchewing for 2 hours now on 40M and I don't feel them on my ears,I cut the lows with the EQ and my audio goes now from 150 to 3100hz,its easy to EQ any mic wiith the K3.
I just ended a QSO with W2QN few mins ago and he reported me excellent TX audio with this CM500. Good buy for $38 right ? I'm trying to understand the bias requirements for the CM-500
specifically and electret/condenser (which is it) mikes in general. Yamaha's adaptor uses 3V (2 AAA batteries) in series with a 2.2K resistor and a 1 microfarad DC blocking capacitor. I would rather not depend on batteries. My reading of the KSB2 manual says to use 10K fed from 5V while I have heard that it should be 10K for this unit. I am not sure what my K3 is supplies. I would also like to use the mike with a Kenwood TS-940. That rig has 8V available at the mike connector. So if I build an adaptor to use with that rig what is the proper value resistor to use? Or should I build a quickie 3V regulator fed from the 8V and then use a 2.2K resistor? I presume I would need some value of DC blocking capacitor for the Kenwood. How does one determine the proper voltages and resistance values? Is it to get a specific voltage, current or what? How close do you have to be or is it non-critical? What difference does it make? Where can one find information? Thanks all from an old timer who is still trying to get up to date from the dynamic and crystal mikes of the 60s and 70s. David,
It is not critical. Look at the reflector post by Jim Brown in the last couple days - I received it 01/15/2010 at 12:06 Eastern time. Jim is quite familiar with the microphone and explains it much better than I can. 73, Don W3FPR David Christ wrote: > I'm trying to understand the bias requirements for the CM-500 > specifically and electret/condenser (which is it) mikes in general. > > Yamaha's adaptor uses 3V (2 AAA batteries) in series with a 2.2K > resistor and a 1 microfarad DC blocking capacitor. I have my CM-500 that arrived yesterday directly to the radio rear mic input and the BIAS enabled at "rP.L bIAS" and it works great.Don't know how many volts the K3 produce in that setting but the headphone set works very good.

Wonder if I could ask a favor of someone on the list,
I am installing the upgrade DSP board today and would like to do the IF output mod. the Extreme signal mod, and the VFO noise mod. Does anyone have these PDF downloaded and they can send them to me in an attachment? I have tried several times to download them and get the error that the files are damaged and cannot be repaired, I suspect my Adobe is too old, and my other PDF reader does not seem to read them either. I am on 28.8 dial up so cannot load a new Adobe etc. Appreciate any help.. thanks.. 73 Merv KH7C ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
