Contemplating the building of a K2 this winter (fall) for use aboard my
narrow boat afloat on the UK inland waterway system. The intention will be to slightly 'ruggedise' the K2, conformal coating the PCBs against moisture etc. I know that the manual states that upright toroids should not be glued into place but ..... This K2 will be operating within 2m of a single cylinder diesel engine that has a pronounced 'thump'/low frequency vibration - crockery left on the draining board some 5m forward of the engine is liable to make its way back into the sink!. So, bearing in mind that I only wish to secure the edge of the toroids that are upright and touching the PCB, not coat the whole toroid in adhesive, (and change the inductance) what adhesive would be best ...? Two part epoxy? Superglue? Silicone Sealant? Many thanks 73's Joe Jones Narrowboat 'Will Crooks' The Llangollen Canal N. I had to look, and others might want to also.

Beeswax is the traditional material for fixing coils, and has the benefit of being removable using moderate heat. _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Now that is a cool boat.
(sorry, this starting to go OT but so cool. <grin>) Joe, you should plan this trip for the summer with a special QSL for contacting you on the boat. That is so neat. Michael N4NMR (Also, Joe, please contact me direct. I tried e-mail and your address doesn't work for me. (sorry for the OT).) Hi Joe,
What about a little bit of hot melt glue? That way its reversible. My feeling is that due to the low mass of the toroids, you will not need to do this, especially since it's a thump and not a buzz. But... > Two part epoxy? I wouldn't. Too permanent. > Superglue? Difficult to use since there will be very little contact area between the wires and the board. Also might be more permanent than you want. > Silicone Sealant? ONLY if you can get the kind that doesn't emit acetic acid when it cures! The regular stuff can be quite corrosive. Again, I wouldn't do this. -- 73, Vic, K2VCO Fresno CA http://www.qsl.net/k2vco _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
