Fldigi Mac no TX Audio

Fellow Elecrafters,
I am trying to do some Digital modes but using the computer/Software

I am running a MacMini, with K3-S. Software is a Fldigi (3.23-13 latest as of today).

Wiring - 1 USB cable from K3-S to MacMini.
I am using the RIGCat interface.
Configure->Sound Card -> Audio is set to USB Audio Codec (See below for device confirmation)
K3-A is in DATA-A mode.

PTT-KEY is set to OFF-OFF (mentioned in the k3.xml right file)

QSY Works
Mode Works
RX Works - nice decoding on the Computer screen

But no TX Output. The K3-S red TX light is on - but nothing ….

As I have decoding on the Screen I am presuming that the USB cable is receiving Audio from the K3 correctly.

The output from system_profiler SPAudioDataType yields sensible data…. specifically

Devices:

Built-in Output:

Default System Output Device: Yes
Manufacturer: Apple Inc.
Output Channels: 2
Current SampleRate: 48000
Transport: Built-in

USB Audio CODEC :

Default Output Device: Yes
Manufacturer: Burr-Brown from TI
Output Channels: 2
Current SampleRate: 48000
Transport: USB

USB Audio CODEC :

Default Input Device: Yes
Input Channels: 2
Manufacturer: Burr-Brown from TI
Current SampleRate: 48000
Transport: USB

So what am I missing ?

Answers on an electronic postcard please .

Tim,

Do you have *anything* plugged into the LINE IN jack on the K3S? If so,
that overrides audio from the internal CODEC.

I don't know Apple, but I do know the K3. Go to your computer's
soundcard gain and set the slider for the soundcard output to about 2/3
of maximum.
THEN - during the Fldigi transmit, set the K3S LINE IN level to produce
4 bars solid with the 5th bar flickering on the ALC meter. That is the
proper drive level. Note that for the K3/K3S, this is the NO ALC point.
Adjust the desired power with the power knob. Ignore the internet
advice to use the audio level to adjust the power - the K3/K3S is
different than most transceivers in its power control mechanism.

BTW, you can do those transmit adustments with the K3/K3S in TX TEST
mode so no RF is generated - keep the airways clean of "tuneup signals".

In the K3S menus, Have you verified the selection for Mic Select : rear mic, front mic, or line in? Having it set to the wrong input could make same symptoms you experience. Don't ask how I know :-)

The Solution has been found.

Firstly, I checked that Fldigi was not misbehaving on my Mac.

Installed on a spare development Mac, and with no radio connected at all - pressed CQ, I audibly verified that I could hear the audio comping out of the Mac’s speakers… It was very nice sounding. (I double checked this with the USB Codec using the excellent Audio Jack from
Rogue Ameoba - excellent - and again I could hear sound card generated output).

So Mac Ok (IMHO) lets check the K3-S….

1 Usb Cable plugged in - no audio in or out leads (there were this morning !! thanks Don). Plus I have my Bencher plugged in - which seems to be rather laughing at me.

K3-S settings
Data Mode-A
MIC SEL Line-In
LIN OUT - Nor 10 (I can see this effects the Decode signal strength on the Mac so this must be correct also)
PTT-KEY OFF-OFF

Scanning the Elecraft archives for the umpteenth time - I found a similar issue (Thank you Brian — K1LI)

I seemed to need to adjust something called the mic button - Huh … I almost never use Voice - so I had to read the manual (again) and after a suitable tweak - it all worked.

Apologies - Apple, Fldigi software developers - nice work Elecraft - Digital with 1 cable … awesome
