Hi again, I have told you that my K2 #4979 has worked fine until it suddenly appears to be dead. When powered on the display first shows ELECRAFT then 7100.00 in CW mode and that a constant sound hears. I just talked to a friend here in Stockholm about it. He has built two K2s and his theory is that the rig is stuck in transmit and that the audio is the side tone. That explains why it only responds to the power knob. So what, if any, can be done about this? Is your key line shorted? That sounds a lot like a K2 with the CW key closed
when it's turned on. The tone is the sidetone, but it won't initialize properly with the key closed, leading to a lot of issues. I haven't managed to do it, but shorting the PTT line on the mic might do much the same, but I suspect the tone is the sidetone which you won't hear in SSB mode. If you don't have a key plugged in, check to see if something is shorting the key circuit at the jack - or perhaps if you have been doing anything at all inside the K2, look there! Most problems come from the last place touched, no matter how improbable it seems! Rolf...how is your K2 normally configured? Do you keep the key input set
to normal/reverse keyer paddle input or Handkey? If you normally run a straight key, bug or external keyer then yes a possible short in the keying line would explain your symptoms. But if you normally use the internal keyer and the keying line was shorted you should be hearing either dits or dahs constantly. A stuck keyswitch on power up would lock up all buttons but not generate a tone. Sorry I can't be more helpful. DOH!
Of course...If BOTH the dit and dah lines are shorted to ground and you have auto-sense on...that would cause a continuous carrier instead of dits or dahs. Didn't think about that at first...sorry.
