I think I'm having a problem seating U1.
It doesn't go down into the sock to the shoulders on the pins, there's about 1/16" to go til it hits that point. It feels all the way in, and is snug, I can pull it out but it won't fall out. Not sure if there's something wrong or not and I don't want to apply any power til I'm sure. Thanks, -Chris ____________________________________________________________________________________Fussy? So I was able to set U1 lower in the socket, it looks
like its deeper on one side then the other. I did a power on test and there was no smoke, I saw E10 and Batt Lo, and the numbers on the display changing when I move the encoder dial, but in the menu there's some things not right. I can see some menu choices are correct, like Led(spelled LEd), I was able to set batt to a lower voltage ok, I'm using the 6 cells at 9v so I set it to 8v. Some of the menus where not displayed right, missing bars or just plan wrong looking, things like STL/STP, would be S-L S-P, the T-R was totally incorrect, ATU, RCL and others were not correct. I don't know if I'm having a seating issue still, damaged U1 or if something else is wrong, like a poor connect on one of the resister packs. I will check the connections again but any help would be greatly appreciated. I was able to seat U1 all the way finally after
checking all the pin depths with a clipped lead. The menu options are still messed up. Somethings look fine, the freq numbers are counting ok, it displays E09 and E10 ok(tried resetting the chip but powering on holding menu and band) but some of the options are still not looking right. Something is wrong somewhere. Is there something besides the U1 MCU that effects the display of certain menu options? If needed I can note exactly which menu choices and how they look, maybe take pictures if needed. Any help would be appreciated, the MCU U1 is seated all the way now. thanks, -Chris --- Koaps <[hidden email]> wrote: > So I was able to set U1 lower in the socket, it > looks > like its deeper on one side then the other. > > I did a power on test and there was no smoke, I saw > E10 and Batt Lo, and the numbers on the display > changing when I move the encoder dial, but in the > menu > there's some things not right. > > I can see some menu choices are correct, like > Led(spelled LEd), I was able to set batt to a lower > voltage ok, I'm using the 6 cells at 9v so I set it > to > 8v. > > Some of the menus where not displayed right, missing > bars or just plan wrong looking, things like > STL/STP, > would be S-L S-P, the T-R was totally incorrect, > ATU, > RCL and others were not correct. > > I don't know if I'm having a seating issue still, > damaged U1 or if something else is wrong, like a > poor > connect on one of the resister packs. > > I will check the connections again but any help > would > be greatly appreciated. > > Thanks, > -Chris > > > --- Koaps <[hidden email]> wrote: > > > I think I'm having a problem seating U1. > > > > It doesn't go down into the sock to the shoulders > on > > the pins, there's about 1/16" to go til it hits > that > > point. > > > > It feels all the way in, and is snug, I can pull > it > > out but it won't fall out. > > > > Not sure if there's something wrong or not and I > > don't > > want to apply any power til I'm sure. > > > > Thanks, > > -Chris > > > > > > > > > > > Opinionated? Chris,
I would strongly suggest that you have a bad solder connection or perhaps solder bridge. If you have a lot of solder on the solder pads, that is not a good thing - you need only enough to fill the thru-hole. If you do have excess solder, remove it with solder wick or other suitable method. If you used minimum solder, you may not have heated the solder pads sufficiently. Look at the soldering carefully. The solder should flow out to a thin, almost invisible edge on both the solder pad and the component lead. There may be a slight fillet of solder, but it should be concave in shape - if it is convex, or in the worst case looks like a ball of solder on the component lead, you can conclude that insufficient heat was used - move the soldering temperature up to 700 degrees. Proper soldering is essential for the closely packed KX1. 73, Don W3FPR Koaps wrote: > I was able to seat U1 all the way finally after > checking all the pin depths with a clipped lead. > > The menu options are still messed up. > > Somethings look fine, the freq numbers are counting > ok, it displays E09 and E10 ok(tried resetting the > chip but powering on holding menu and band) but some > of the options are still not looking right. > > Something is wrong somewhere. So rechecked everything,
I think the problem might have just been what I expected to see and the way it was displayed were different. Since the manual doesn't show actual pictures of the menu options, I expected them to look different. Could someone with a working KX1 just let me know if their menus look the same as mine and if I am missing anything, I don't see the CAL option. http://null.bz/KX1-Display/ Thanks -Chris --- Koaps <[hidden email]> wrote: > I was able to seat U1 all the way finally after > checking all the pin depths with a clipped lead. > > The menu options are still messed up. > > Somethings look fine, the freq numbers are counting > ok, it displays E09 and E10 ok(tried resetting the > chip but powering on holding menu and band) but some > of the options are still not looking right. > > Something is wrong somewhere. Those are exactly right, Chris. The seven-segment display is limited in how
it can display alpha characters. That's why the odd spacing and assortment of upper and lower case. After all, it's normal use is to display numbers. You get to CAL by going to AtU, then press/hole MENU to go to the second level and rotate the tuning knob to find CAL. Thanks a lot Ron,
