It was November last year when I decided on a "fully loaded" slightly used K3 versus a FTDX5000 and I am so stoked that I made that decision.
I still monitor the user group for the high end Yaesu 5K because I am still interested in understand how the two rigs compare. One of today's posting was focused on roofing filters with a couple folks posting complaints about the stock filters for SSB on the 5K and their performance. Complaints about filters on a $5k plus rig, woah! Made me smile inside and out. One noted gent who I have gotten to know a little stated about the performance delta in this regard with the K3. Man, I am SO STOKED that I got this rig. Thanks Eric and Wayne and the Elecraft team for providing us with a better value and performance alternative to big three. I am waiting anxiously for my KX3 to arrive and I as soon as i close my next big business consulting project (in the works) I am getting another K3. Pondering the same decision here. In fact, I've found a "well-equipped"
K3, and am looking forward to receiving it. The FT-5K is a fine, fine radio, and I wouldn't mind having one, but even after I add the second receiver, DVR and 2 FM filters (one to give me AM on the 2nd RX, which I believe will work), the base FT-5K would still cost me $2000 more. I like the looks of the Yaesu better, but not that much better... 73 from a soon-to-be K3 owner, Scott, N9AA On 2/26/12 11:37 AM, Keith Heimbold wrote: > It was November last year when I decided on a "fully loaded" slightly used K3 versus a FTDX5000 and I am so stoked that I made that decision. > > I still monitor the user group for the high end Yaesu 5K because I am still interested in understand how the two rigs compare. Hi,
I can confirm that you can use the FM filter to *receive* AM with excellent results up the max BW the DSP allows, 4.2kHz as I remember it. I don't have the 6kHz filter, no need for it unless you want to transmit AM. Buy your "well-equipped" K3, you'll be happy with it. AB2TC - Knut
