May I offer two excellent headphone choices at two different price
levels. The Sennheiser HD280PRO (approx $100) is (IMHO) a superb value for the money and very comfortable. For $189 (Sporty's Pilot Shop) you can buy a David Clark H10S-DC ("listen only") headset. I can discern no difference between the two in terms of comfort or audio level. Both come with 1/8" stereo terminations and include 1/4" stereo/mono adapters. The David Clark headset has higher "clamping pressure" but it does not compromise comfort level as the gel pads are quite effective. The extra $$ for the David Clark doesn't really buy any improved performance - per se - but I've been using David Clark cans in my airplanes since 1973 and I've never had one fail -- never. Because I worked in pro audio and sound reinforcemtn, I've long owned a set of David Clark ear protectors, but they are the last thing I would want to wear for more than a few hours, let along 24 hours of contesting on a weekend. Sennheiser makes good headphones. So does Sony, and I own two pairs. But for hamming, the best deal by far is the Yamaha CM500, which plugs straight into the rear panel of a K3, still feels very comfortable after 24 hours, and sounds great on the air. Cost about $45. 73, Jim K9YC ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Nice if you can get them for $45 or somewhere around that price. I have tried to place an order from a few sites in the US selling around this price but they will not ship to Australia. The US$ and AU$ is pretty much 1:1 at the moment. The only place I have found that will ship to Australia is http://www.globalsound.com.au/yamaha-cm500-headset-with-builtin-microphone-p-9928.html which despite the .au address is physically in New Zealand and the price is AU$150 including delivery. This makes them about $90 more expensive delivered than in the US. I'm flat out funding my own retirement and have no intention of funding some one else's pension fund. Paul, check out this page from Amazon.com on shipping to Australia. Looks fairly
cheap, and the CM-5000 is $46.00 USD there. http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=596184 73, Mike NF4L On 12/29/2011 2:52 AM, Paul wrote: >> But for hamming, the best deal by far is the >> Yamaha CM500, which plugs straight into the rear panel of a K3, still >> feels very comfortable after 24 hours, and sounds great on the air. >> Cost about $45. > Nice if you can get them for $45 or somewhere around that price. Paul,
The places I have checked for the CM500 headset (B&H Photo and Sweetwater Sound) indicate they will ship internationally - unless the manufacturer has placed some restrictions on international shipping. So it may be the item rather than the distributor that is causing you problems. 73, Don W3FPR On 12/29/2011 2:52 AM, Paul wrote: >> But for hamming, the best deal by far is the >> Yamaha CM500, which plugs straight into the rear panel of a K3, still >> feels very comfortable after 24 hours, and sounds great on the air. >> Cost about $45. > Nice if you can get them for $45 or somewhere around that price. Jim, I defer to your professional judgement. But I would like to just
add that David Clark seems to have reduced their trademark clamping pressure on the H10S-DC product perhaps because they are "listen only" and intended for *passengers* to listen to their entertainment devices, hence the 1/8" stereo plug. I would be reluctant to dismiss this model based upon comparison to their aviation headsets which are, for sure, superior but high-quality bone crushers. Interested in the great comments on the Yamaha CM500 headset I was able to order one this morning new for less than $40 including shipping to San Diego from a vendor on amazon.
