When the KX1 is used hand-held, it's difficult to log, since you need
three hands (one each for the KX1, log, and pen). To simplify this, we've created a loose-leaf mini-log that attaches to the back of the radio via the thumbscrews. When operating hand-held, you simply flip the rig over and log the QSO. Even when not operating hand-held, the log sheets can be stored in this location for ready access. They're easy to get off because of the two U-shaped channels for attachment at the thumbscrews. In our tests, the log worked well even with a solder lug attached at one thumb screw (for a trailing ground wire). You'll find a .pdf file for the mini-log, and a photo showing the log sheets in use, at: http://www.elecraft.com/KX1/KX1.htm Feel free to print out as many sheets as you'd like for your own use. We suggest heavy card stock, 65 pound or higher (about the weight of business card paper). Trim out the sheets carefully using an X-acto knife or other sharp tool. You can stack quite a few sheets under the thumb screws -- certainly enough for a typical outing. You could also cut out a piece of transparency stock or Vellum to protect the paper sheets during transport. This top sheet should be moved to the bottom of the stack during operation. We didn't include columns for mode or power output level. This info could be noted in the blank area at the right of the mini-log, since it's likely to be the same for a group of QSOs. Another Tip you may or may not find useful. Laminate your logs with clear
plastic shelving paper. You can then write on it with pencil, transfer your log, erase and use them over. 73, KI4DGH Chuck Gehring -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]]On Behalf Of wayne burdick Sent: Monday, June 14, 2004 2:01 PM To: Elecraft Reflector; HF Pack; QRP-L Subject: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX1 mini-log attaches to back cover When the KX1 is used hand-held, it's difficult to log, since you need three hands (one each for the KX1, log, and pen). Gotta Love the way Wayne thinks. These templets work great. I did need to
enlarge them some to fit on to my KX1. For some reason the template as sent was about 90% the size that fit the rig. Now I am ready to hit the field and travel. There is even enough room to write notes on the back if you do happen to have a pen or pencil handy, by just turning over the log. Thanks again Wayne for another great idea. I printed a page of these mini-logs last night on my laser printer
using some heavy matt Epson photo paper and they look great. I was also thinking that for short outings that I might try laminating one of these log sheets and use a water soluble fine tip marker (if they exist) so that I can reuse it over and over. I'll just have to remind myself to copy the log over to someplace more permanent when I get home. Another great idea from Elecraft! Thanks Wayne. I would use a permanent fine tip marker, rather than a water-soluble
non-permanent one. The non-permanent will smear if you accidentally rub it, and will run if it gets at all wet. The permanent marker can still be removed using an alcohol swab. I learned this one the hard way, marking maps in the army.
