I just grabbed a signal generator from work and brought it home...
Turned on the preamp and at about .320mV rms I got a HI SIG warning and poof the preamp was disabled. Then turned the signal up further yet. I didn't note the point at which it turned off exactly but it was just over 2Vrms. This testing puts this mod and the software to be working 100% and both of the trip points are occurring in the range in which they are expected. This makes me very happy because the first year I took the K3 out to Field Day I'd owned it for only a few days. The rig ended up dying at that FD. Thankfully it was fixed in a timely manner but the solution was to replace R66 (I think was the ref des) and Q8. For good measure Q9 was replaced as well. R66 dies as a result of too much current through Q8 and Q9 (which are in parallel). I'm quite glad to have this one in place. Should provide quite a bit of additional protection. Although in writing this email I thought it would be good to know the value of the attenuator. However I wasn't able to find it... Anyone know where this is? ~Brett (KC7OTG) ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Makes sense...
Just found that on the FAQ page too... Thanks much. Feels good knowing that there is at minimum an extra 10dB of protection there! Gotta love it! ~Brett(KC7OTG) On Sun, 2009-08-16 at 17:51 -0600, Bob Cunnings wrote: > -10 dB according to the K3 RF board schematic, page 4 of 4. > > Bob NW8L > > On Sun, Aug 16, 2009 at 5:30 PM, Brett Howard<[hidden email]> wrote: > > > > Although in writing this email I thought it would be good to know the > > value of the attenuator.
