HK0NA Malpelo DXpedition

Paul VanOveren-2
Worked them on their first “real” day today... on 12,15 17 & 20 meters with the K3 (758) and the KPA 500 (262), TH11DX at 95’, what a hoot, # 335 DXCC for me. Way to go Elecraft, love your equipment...

Re: HK0NA Malpelo DXpedition

Unusual for me, but I managed to strike on the first day.  I thought I had the KPA500 in "operate" mode when in fact it was sitting idle and the K3 was putting out about 75 watts on 20.  With the subreceiver on and the P3 visually looking, I was able to pinpoint right where they were listening.  3rd call got them once I figured out which direction they were tuning after each QSO.  Needless to say, in my opinion, the P3 is much more valuable for busting a pileup than the KPA500 when the conditions are above minimum like they were this afternoon on 20 meters.  Antenna was a Cushcraft A3S up just over 35 feet.

At least this operation is the legitimate one.  There have been a couple of pirates operating over the last week but if one didn't succumb to the feeding frenzy and first check to see if they were coming out of Europe or from the proper heading for Malpelo they were relatively easy to distinguish.  The "UP Cops" were having a field day.

One advantage of having the pirates out there last week, most of the poor operators thought they had worked them and the cluster was a bit better mannered this afternoon.   I'm listening to them right now on 14024 and good manners seem to be in abundance at the moment.  Signals are peaking S7 to S8 into the Wichita area at 00:10 UTC.
