HW-101

Guys,
I know this probably is wrong place to be asking questions about the heathkit, but, I'm desperate! Anybody have any suggestions to correct "chip" in cw transmission?

Having read through the EHAM reviews of the HW-101 (about 4 or 5 pages)
there seem to be no comments about CHIRP during CW operation, although
the general drift is that the rig is a dog on CW in general.

I wonder if your problem with chirp could be due to a seriously (VERY
SERIOUSLY) out-of-spec power supply? Easy to check during keying by
looking at the power supply voltages. If the power supply is an
original, probably the filter caps are in need of replacing (at least).

I ran an SB401 for several years 'way back then, and never had the
slightest problem with chirpy keying.

If the chirp was in receive mode, check bulletin HW-101-32 at
http://www.nostalgickitscentral.com/heath/Service_Bulletins/hw101.txt

One other comment I found said: "And if you do transmit with it everyone of
at least my generation who had a license back in the Heath Kit Days will
know what radio you are using. That little chirp chirp sound in CW mode was
unmistakable as the hallmark of the Heath Radios."

Another comment I found: "Things are much better. This morning I went
through the S-Meter coil alignment and zeroing procedures and there's no
longer any whistling and/or chirping when the RF Gain is maxed out."

Mike, chirp is a sign of VFO instability. It is normal to have a slight amount of chirp on tube type transceivers and transmitters. The "rock solid" CW that is typical of today's phase lock loop products may elude you. So, it depends on how much chirp you have whether you can cure it. Look at the voltage on the VFO and see if it changes any at all with key down. If it does, look at the regulator for the VFO. The HW-101 should not chirp badly if properly set up, but you may not be able to eliminate all of it. Also, Heathkit used poor quality surplus components in their kits and the circuits may need redesign. I have repaired wiring errors in the factory wired circuits of Heath products and seen circumstances where components were not as marked or needed different values when the product was new. You need to recognize that the HW-101, though popular was not up to 1970 standards and is now 40 years old in addition.

I get a thrill when the other ham is using a tube transmitter, or
homebrew, or anything out of the ordinary. I like the bit of chirp or
QRH that tells me a ham is using interesting gear. That's someone I want
to talk to. There's one ham I want to talk to on 40 meter whose signal
has a chirp so broad it sounds like a slide whistle. I like it.

So if you end up having to leave a little bit of chirp, well, that's
alright with me.
