Gents,
I have recently aquired a Hallicrafters SX-43 receiver and have a quick question. The power cable was in very bad shape and didn't have an end connector on it. I am planning on wiring up a new cable but wanted to be sure how to power it. I am assuming it requires a 12VDC source, but I'm not sure. Does anyone have any ideas? Please respond direct. Wow, how much different from an Elecraft rig can you get? Hi!
The SX-43 was designed to run off of 117 vac, 50/60 cps mains power. Although modern mains in the USA tend to be closer to 130 volts today, that will usually not cause serious damage (real history buffs who treat their boatanchors with tender care use a variac to keep the voltage down to the mfgr's specs). You'll find an octal socket on the back of the chassis. There needs to be a shorting plug installed in it for the receiver to run off of a-c mains. Without it, the heater circuit is interrupted. You can also furnish d-c to that octal socket to run the receiver off of an external supply. I checked and it'll need 6.3 vdc (NOT 13 vdc!) at about 4 amps and 270 vdc at 100 mA. Back when this receiver was popular, external "vibrator" power packs, such as were commonly used in car radios, were used to run the receiver from a car battery. Car batteries were 6 volts back in the 50's <G>.
