I remind people that before the FCC became involved,
there was no test. If you could beg, borrow, or steal
the parts and nail them to a board in the correct
order, you were on the air. Talk about vanity calls,
you made your own!
I took my General test in the Federal Building in
Cleveland Ohio, the pressure was on and the test was
tough. I came home to an HW16 with a homebrew VFO.
I'm now studying the Q&A for the Extra exam, which is
a far cry from even the General back in the day.
Following the trend, the new test will require the
applicant to enter their credit card number FROM
MEMORY in front of 3 VE's, including the expiry date
and that little 3 digit code on the back of the
card!!!
I loved the K2's I built and learned so much, K3
should take me to the next level.
The band was so bad today that 20m was dead. Hey Eric
and Wayne, it's really gonna seem like the K3's make
magic when they are delivered in the Fall - clever!
;-)
mojo mojo mojo...
Re: [Elecraft] Hate the word HAM
When I took my general in 1961 at the LA Federal
Building, I had to draw a
schematic of a Colpitt's Osc.
They weren't specific if it had to be solid state or
Vacuum tube, so I drew
the solid state version I thought I knew best.
