Heil Proset. They sound great, have the cool phase reversing feature
and fit quite well.

And, they come with a pretty good microphone also. ;-)

I'm sure Lisa at elecraft could set you up with some just perfect for
use with your Elecraft radio...

There was just a thread about headphones, comfort and the noisy shack on
the cq-contest reflector.

First ....... I have Heil Pro Sets - two of them.
One pair is right out of the box several years ago.
After about 5 or 6 hours they hurt my ears and head.
The other pair I got the new ear piece covers that look like a stocking.
They are better, but I can't tell you why, but they just don't feel
right after several l hours.
Neither of them keep a whole lot of ambient room noise out - like
relays, blowers, kids, wife, etc.

Now for cq-contest reflector .....
One short thread that I've found (Noisy shack? Here's the cure) recommends:

The David Clark headsets have 24 db noise reduction and cost 59.95.  It
would be possible
to mount a boom mike on them if you really have to operate SSB!

Also, you could go the K6LL route.
1. Buy a Peltor H10A hearing protector 30 db noise reduction (about $25)

2. Buy two little speakers from Mouser (253-5405) $4 each.

3. Use sticky-back Velcro to mount the speakers in the hearing
protector. Unless you have ears like Dumbo, there's plenty of room in
there. Dumbo may have to pluck out some foam to get more clearance. Just
run the wires over the ear cups. I used speaker wire from the 99 cent
store, but RG-174 might be nicer.

4. Buy a Heil HC-4 or HC-5 element (about $33)

5. Take a one foot piece of #14 copper wire and solder a copper penny to
one end. Glue or Velcro the HC-4 to the penny. Twist the other end of
the wire around the headband wires of the hearing protector.

6. Glue some of the acoustic foam that comes with the HC-4 over the mike
aperture to protect it.

Then K8DO recommends ANR aircraft headsets.

They appear to be top of the line.

There are some nice stereo headphones out there that sound ok, but  I
think I'm going to try a pair of ear protectors and the Mouser
speakers.  Or maybe take the speakers out of one of the Heil's.

Maybe it's time for an Elecraft kit - Hearing protector, speakers and a
cord.  Boom microphone optional!

Hank and the group,
One of the worst feeling headphone arrangements is any of the old hard
phones from military or 1950's ham days without cushions.  The rubber
cushions that completely covered those types of phones used to be sold by
Allied Radio, and made by Trimm or one of the other headphone outfits for
the high impedance, (sensitive) phones of the day.

However, now that the rubber foam covers are gone, I found a comfortable
conversion for the hard case phones (and possibly uncomfortable modern
phones):   Go to Walgreens and get a two pack of foam makeup sponges from
the cosmetics department.  These are flat round discs just right to fit the
Trimm etc. phones discs.   Cut a hole in middle of each sponge to form a
"donut".  Put double sided Scotch tape on the side you stick to the phone
diaphragm cover such that the sound holes are centered in your donut "hole".
You can trim the circle for smaller diameter phones if needed, with
scissors.  You can mark the area to cut out with ball point pen or marker.

You will find these converted phones now can be worn for hours, and the
white foam conforms well to the ear area.  It reduces extraneous sounds
quite well.  The foam seems to endure well, as mine have not discolored for
several years.  If they ever do, you can find replacement sponges at low
cost at a drug store.  These cosmetic sponges have small, fine hollow spaces
so do not look like cleaning sponges at all.

I like the Heil Pro Set Plus my friend has, but my Heil Pro Set from
Elecraft are almost unusable after an hour or so. The size of the hole
where your ear fits is quite different, and the headphones I bought from
Elecraft make my ears hurt a lot. It's enough that I'm about to buy the
Plus.

Maybe my ears are bigger than most (I doubt it).

      I had the same experience, but then just reduced the tension by
bending them open (ultimately, slightly "backwards") until I got the
tension down.  Now they do pretty well.  My only criticism so far is with
the active noise cancellation b/c the cutoff freq is just too low.  It may
work great in an airplane or next to a freeway, but it does nothing to
keep the sounds of other operators out.

      When operating cw, I use a pair of medium range phones from Radio
Shack.  I just went down and tried a bunch, found the pair I liked the
best, and replaced the plug.

      The phase reversal trick on the Heil is pretty neat!  No problem
adding it to most headphones.  One can also achieve the same effect with a
center-tapped isolation transformer at the input.  It should also be
possible to do it with just capacitors, but I haven't done this yet b/c I
want to try tailoring the values to get some kind of useful effect from
the freq. dependent phase shift :).

i found a pair of sennheisers similiar to the Hd414 ( my favorite) with a
boom mike !!!!!
then i found a european pilot's headset  with a boom electret , also
sennheiser.

they all sound fabulous .....but not cheap...

They do allow ambient room noise in, but you can actually forget you
have these headphones on.

I recently purchased a pair of Sennheiser PX 100 headphones for $40 and I'm
quite pleased. This is a portable set that comes with a carrying case. They fit
lightly over the ears so it comfortable and I can still hear others (XYL etc)
in the house.  SSB sounds better than on with a $10 pair of Sony headphones.  
However..... CW quality sounds about the same as on the less expensive pair.  
In general for 40 bucks its a great deal and a good trade off with price.....
Your milage may vary...

A couple of years ago when I was in the market for headphones, someone on
another mailing list recommended Radio Shack Model 33-1198 headphones. Since
there's a Radio Shack close to where I live, I decided to buy these phones
instead of ordering something over the Net and waiting for them to arrive.

They are monaural headphones made for use with a scanner at racing events.
That being the case, they are pretty good at blocking out ambient noise.
They cost $50. RS also has a "noise cancelling" version for $70.

After bending the head strap a little (I have a big head), I got them to
where they're quite comfortable. I can wear them for hours during a contest.
