Heil BM-10 Headset

Dave Cox
I just purchased a used Heil BM-10 headset, and I'm trying to determine how
to connect it to my KX3. Neither Heil nor Elecraft have been much help. The
headphone component works fine, but the mic has been a bit of a challenge.
Elecraft said that no adapter is needed and that the BM-10 should work just
fine with the 1/8" mic mono plug plugged directly into the mic jack on the
KX3, but it doesn't work, even after I set the MICBIAS and MICBTN both to
"OFF." The BM-10 has an HC-5 element. Is a Heil adapter required? If so,
which one? Any ideas on how best to connect the mic will be greatly
appreciated. --Dave, NB5N

Dave,
I have a Heil Proset headset. It required no adapters and worked fine for the ARRL SSB DX contest. I'm not entirely sure which element came with it. I talked to Heil and they told me what to order. All I needed to do was to set MIC BTN to off. everything else was OK. I did fiddle with the transmit equalizer, compression, and mic gain until I had the audio I wanted; the same settings also work well with the Elecraft handheld mic. It might be that the elements are the same as Elecraft has been using Heil elements in their mics for the K2 and the K3.

This might help, if it looks like a ProSet:
