Heil Handi Mike

Van W1WCG
Season's Greetings to all,

and many thanks to all those that responded to my query concerning the use
of the Heil Handi-Mic with a K2.  I must agree with the majority that the
H4/H5 mike elements seem to have a relatively low level output, and
therefore require special considerations when used with the K2.  In using
the mike with the stock KSB2 SSB adapter, the mike -will- drive the K2, but
I feel required to speak somewhat loudly into the mike at very close range.
I know that the mike is designed for close-up (2-3-in) talking,  but even at
that range, unless I speak really loudly (and even considering the peakiness
of voice modulation) it just didn't seem to be enough.  Accordingly, I
decided to employ the modification that increases R14 on the adapter board
to 10k ohms.  This makes it much easier for me to achieve what I think is a
reasonable amount of modulation with my normal talking position.  I don't
use SSB much with the K2; when I have, I've always gotten good audio
reports.  The HM-5 didn't seem to have much more output than the MH-2 I use
with my older K2, so I'll modify that one as well, to reduce the need to
yell and spit into the mike.

And yes, despite comments on the Heil site that would lead one to think that
the H5 element was a dynamic element that did not require biasing,
it --really does-- require the 5.6k resistor to 5v for proper operation!

I wish Heil was a little more forthcoming on the specs for both mikes; I
tramped around on their site but had no luck finding a spec sheet for the
mikes.  They do a lot of talking about how good they are, though....:<)

Thanks again to all!

73, Van W1WCG
