Hi All,
Just ordered a K2 last week and am looking forward to melting some solder and having some fun! I see that Elecraft offers a Heil Proset tailored to the K2. Ironically, I bought a Proset just a few months ago with the HC4 element. Can anyone tell me how superior the mic in the Elecraft Proset is to the HC4 element in the set I currently own? (I'm really hoping someone will tell me I can keep the set I have, but an objective opinion would always be preferred!) 8-) Thanks and 73, Ken Alexander VE3HLS _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I've used a couple different non-Elecraft Heil headsets with my K2. I use the standard Heil Proset Plus which has both the HC4 & HC5 elements as well as the BM-5 (I think that is the model, single earpiece with an HC5 element I think). The only thing I did to the K2 was modify one resistor, R14 on the KSB2, from 1k to 10k, to get extra gain. I've gotten great signal reports from other stations while I use SSB, however I use much more CW with the K2 than SSB. You should be able to keep your existing Heil headset rather than spending more money for the Elecraft version.

I would just call or eMail Heil and ask them which
element (HC-4 DX or HC-5) they use in the Elecraft headset. Give you odds your HC-4 will work dynamite with the K2... 73, Art W6KY --- Ken Alexander <[hidden email]> wrote: > Hi All, > > Just ordered a K2 last week and am looking forward > to > melting some solder and having some fun! > > I see that Elecraft offers a Heil Proset tailored to > the K2. Thanks to everyone for your quick and thoughtful
responses. Interestingly, the Elecraft Proset uses a condenser mic element. I'd always assumed that the HC-4 and HC-5 were dynamic elements. Maybe I'm wrong. Ken,
You are right, the Heil HC-4 and HC-5 are dynamic elements. I use Heil's Proset Plus with the HC-4 and HC-5 elements, and get full specified PEP from an unmodified K2/100 #3255. 73, Geoff GM4ESD ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ken Alexander" <[hidden email]> To: "Art - W6KY" <[hidden email]>; "Elecraft" <[hidden email]> Sent: Tuesday, March 21, 2006 6:44 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Heil Proset question > Thanks to everyone for your quick and thoughtful > responses. My first SSB QSO with my 10-watt K2 was with a DX station who said he
wouldn't have picked me put of the pilleup except for my "excellent audio". I was (and still am) using the Heil HC4 dynamic mike element which I retrofitted into my old station mike. 73, de Earl, K6SE K2/100 #2622 _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I bought mine from HRO in Burbank - they called Heil while I was waited, and
asked his advice. He said that I should use the Icom headset with the Kenwood cable, which I bought. I've gotten very good audio reports over time. I also use the Heil footswitch. I concur with what Mark did. I had low audio output till I changed R14 to
10K. I use Heil headsets with the HC-4 element. I also used the KI6WX mod to increase the bandwidth to 2.5KHZ. Now I get good audio reports. Also make sure you have aligned the filters properly. Also installed the RP5 mod on the KSB2 to increase compression. SSbA is now at 2 and SSbC is at 3. 73, N2TK, Tony #3481 -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]]On Behalf Of [hidden email] Sent: Tuesday, March 21, 2006 1:09 PM To: Ken Alexander; Elecraft Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Heil Proset question I've used a couple different non-Elecraft Heil headsets with my K2.
