I don't quite understand the "HC4 doesn't work with a KX3" ???
I have a Heil headset with the HC4 element and it works fine...
YES, bias must be off as also "mic button"...
YES, mike gain will need to be higher.
Since the HC4 has a 2K boost, the TX EQ gain (see:
https://observer.wunderwood.org/2015/09/09/transmit-audio-and-compression-with-the-elecraft-kx3/)
... 3200Hz might want to be 0db, too.
