Heil mic question

Ken Kopp
I have made an adapter cable for connecting my
several ICOM mics to my K3 and they all work well.

I have a Heil GM-4/5 "Goldline" desk mic and I have
an uneasy feeling that it doesn't have enough output
to adequately drive the K3.

Is anyone using this mic with a K3 that can confirm
my suspicion?

There should be plenty of mic gain.  I believe WK6I is using a Goldline with
his K3.  If you need more mic gain, use the 'H' range.

I have a Goldline that I use with my K3.

I cannot confirm your suspicion, however, since my Goldline drives my K3
quite nicely. :-)

Ken,
My Heil is working with the K3 just fine.  No problems getting enough drive.

I have 2 Heil Prosets, the Elecraft version and the ICOM/Yaesu /5 version.
Later today I'll check them side by side for comparison on the K3.  I can make
both work equally well on the K-2 using the UN-PCB Universal Mic Interface to
switch the bias in or out.

I use the Heil/Elecraft Proset mono(mic) and stereo(headphones) 3.5mm jacks
on back and I can switch the speaker in or out at will with or without the
headset turned on.

Is there any difference between the K2 proset and the regular Heil
proset (with either the HC4 or HC5)?

RE: Heil mic question

Don Nesbitt
Jay - the Heil Proset (December, 2004) for the K2 that I have has an
electret (condenser) microphone and therefore requires bias.  It was
furnished with the Heil adapter cable that has a "red" bead on it which,
according to the instructions, "May be marked Kenwood" and came with the
5.6K resistor as well as 8 configuration jumper blocks.  Newer ones may be
different but I doubt it.

Neither the HC4 or HC5 cartridges require bias.  They are not electrets.  I
have used all three with the K2 with great success and am currently using
the Proset (with the electret) on my K3 - also with great success.

Hope that helps.  73 es gud dxing -- Don N4HH  K3 #83

<SNIP> Jay asked:

Is there any difference between the K2 proset and the regular Heil
proset (with either the HC4 or HC5)?

Yes, the mic element is different and requires bias.  But, with the TX
equalizer in the K3, you can make any of these sound like the others.
