Hey, you Dayton hf attendees

gwwhatley@juno.com
Can't believe no one has mentioned the new amps.  I await opinions of the amps.  Are you attendees so QRP you didn't even look at em??  Let's hear it from you QRO guys.  I'd like to know your opinion.  Any mention of when they will be for sale?

I really like what I have seen and heard so far on the reflector and want one in my shack.

Re: Hey, you Dayton hf attendees

N8LP

Elecraft is one of the few booths I got a chance to visit as I was
chained to my own booth for the whole show. It's not something I would
buy, but they sure looked well done. I wonder if it's a precursor to a
new contest grade K3 with integral SO2R capability???

Amazingly, even though I only had about 1/2 hour to visit the flea
market near the end of the show, I was able to pick up exactly what I
was looking for. Show attendance appeared down again, but I had about
all the traffic I could handle as a one-man operation (two person
counting my indispensable XYL).

We had a great time and met some really nice folks at the QRP-ARCI
banquet. That was our first stay at the QRP hotels and it worked out
well, although we couldn't attend the daily activities, of course.

What new amp?
Just kidding. I think Eric was losing his voice from talking about the new
amp. I feel the KPA1500 was the hit of the show. Looks like we got to wait
till fall to get one.
Eric was taking a list of those interested in getting more info and/or
purchasing one.
The KPA1500 was using a pair of the switching supplies that are used in the
KPA800. Estimated the weight of the supplies at about 19 lbs. Can't remember
the weight of the RF deck.  I think it was either 23 or 35lbs.
You set up the amp to auto tune to your antennas with fixed values of L and
C for different band segments. This seems somewhat similar to the Acom
2000A. The difference being the 2000A uses variable L and C. When operating
the amp will select the values of L and C depending on the band and band
segment. So it is not continuous autotune while operating.
I believe the amp measures the reflected power to ensure the final
transistors don't get into an unsafe condition. If the reflected power gets
too high the power is cut back. I believe this is done with a 3 db pad
setup. By the way the final transistors are rated at 500V and run at 60V.

I believe the power out on 6M is 300W. The is due to the gain rolloff of the
transistors.

The KPA800 and KPA1500 are the same size. The only major difference is that
the 800 has the PS internal and the 1500 has it external.

There is an RS232 port to run the amp remotely. I plan on doing this since
the amp will be in my basement. I think of a nice future upgrade kit to the
amp where you would have a RCU like the 2000A that would plug into the RS232
port.

There will be a kit and finished/tested amp. With the kit the RF amp boards
and the switching supplies will be pre-built. I believe the price for the
tested amp is $6K and the kit version is $5.6K.

Hopefully I didn't mess up too much in my description. Bottom line - it was
impressive and I want one.

October was mentioned.

Tentative pricing: $5900/$5500 assembled/kit for 1500W; $3900/$3500
assembled/kit for 800W.

The box was bigger than I thought it would be. Didn't take any measurements,
and to my disappointment I realized I got home without taking any pictures
of it, either.

I took my non-ham father with me to the convention just for fun. While I was
looking at the amp and talking to Eric, he was watching Wayne demo the KX1.
He was so impressed that HE almost bought one. I talked him out of it by
buying one myself. :-)

In addition to the KX1 to round out my Elecraft collection, I bought a DSP
board for my K2. Also picked up one of N8LP's cool digital wattmeter kits.

Yes I agree that the KPA 1500 was the hit of the show. My informal survey
showed higher traffic at the Elecraft Booth than at Alpha (I was there
Friday afternoon and Saturday morning). Both seemed to have high traffic.

My wife tried to surprise me with a KX1 but could not get near the booth,
even though she is blond and cute; I had to muscle in later to complete
 the purchase.

G'day,

Sadly Elecraft has been unbelievably coy about these items.  Sure you
can go to an Hamvention and look at one and apparently Eric has now
lost his voice telling all.  Can you find anything on the web site,
apart from a miss-labelled low res picture, no way, at least a couple
of days ago.  Surely FCC certification doesn't get in the way of pre
sale publicity.

Given the hinted prices it would be useful to know what that buys,
including lots of detail about operational configurations,
controllability from K2 and others etc.  It could make all the
difference between KXXXXX or the competition.

I'm not exactly blue collar, as one listee describes themselves, but
justification not just I want one comes into the equation.  Pity we
are not being given any.

Regards,

Mike VP8NO

What nobody has mentioned in this thread about the Elecraft solid state
amps is that the output circuit is not only autotune, but there is also a
built-in antenna tuner.  Alpha and Acom can't match that!

Saw them at Visalia last month and am eagerly awaiting their sales debut.

Pun intended?
