Hint on the K3 from W0CZ

Kenneth Christiansen
Last week end my XYL was gone and I got to spend some quality time with
my K3.
I went out to Best Buy with my birthday gift certificate looking for a
headset.
Most of their headsets needed to plug into a USB port on a computer so I
had to
overlook them. I found a Dynex stereo headset for about $20.00 that
looked as
though it might do the job. The salesman said I could bring it back if
it didn't work.
The padded ear pieces are comfortable and the sound quality is good although
there is not much attenuation of external noise. I find that I can use
them for hours
and my ears do not hurt.

The microphone seemed to have a lot of noise and hum on it and I thought
maybe
it had a bad shield. It had been well packaged though so I decided to
check into
it before I took it back. The microphone turned out to be connected with one
side to the SLEEVE of the plug and the other side to both the TIP and
the RING.
I made an adapter cord with a stereo jack on one end and a mono plug on the
other end and my microphone problem went away.

The bottom line is  make or buy a stereo to mono adapter to use the
microphone
part of a stereo headset on the K3.

73 for  now.

Those computer mics are electret type and have a preamp
built in. The preamp gets its voltage from the ring. Audio
out is on the tip. I think there is a setting in the K3
menus to accept that kind of mic. I don't quite understand
how you managed to get yours working with a mono adapter.
