How about an Elecraft Bulletin Board?

Mike Geddes
Greetings.  I was just thinking to myself how slow the Elecraft reflector
was yesterday on Friday, 4/27.  What a difference a day makes!  Wow.
Certainly there is a lot of well-justified excitement (frenzy?) over the
awesome newly announced K3.  Congratulations Elecraft and I know it will
continue the tradition of innovation and excellence we have come to know and
appreciate from your company!

On another note . . . . there is now another real "interest" out there among
Elecraft fans, while some are still mainly interested in the K2, some in the
K1, some now in the K3, some in other Elecraft kits and tools, and some in
all of it.  Those that are building or enhancing or troubleshooting a K2 may
not be as interested in all of the whirlwind surrounding the K3 (which,
again, is justified).  So I was wondering if you (Eric or Wayne) have ever
considered an Eham type bulletin board where you had sections of interest as
a means of communication and information?  This may be especially useful as
your product line becomes more diverse, along with the interests of your
customers.

Just a thought. You guys are so innovative an open to customer input and we
appreciate it. Keep up the good work and thanks for giving us a great new
product to learn about and enjoy.

73,
Mike

Well, they do have the elecraft e-group on Yahoo Groups, though I am aware
that some people have an aversion to that particular site for some odd
reason. Using something like that would simplify things to some extent.

Mike,

Give it a couple days for the frenzy to settle down and things will get
back to normal.  There is still plenty of interest in the K2, K1 and KX1
here on the reflector. 60+ messages on the K3 is the exception - but it
*IS* exciting.

I appreciate the fact that all products can be discussed on a common forum.

It's Not Only the K3!

KK7P
I don't know if many of you have taken note of this, but...

At Hamvention this year there will be *three* new radios that weren't
there last year.  They are all moderate to high-end rigs, and they are
all from the US.

The last time I saw this level of activity among US ham equipment
manufacturers was in the mid '60s when Swan and Drake and SBE were
challenging Hallicrafters and National and Hammarlund and Collins.  Oh
yes, back then, as I was a 13-year old kid just entering the hobby, I
kept being assured by all the old timers that Amateur radio was dying,
RM-499 (Incentive Licensing) was going to kill it, what was the ARRL
thinking?

For those who wring their hands and say Amateur radio is dead, it has no
relevance in the 21st century except during hurricanes, all products are
made in Asia -- just look at the confidence being expressed in Amateur
radio, and its future, by the substantial investments these three
companies have just made.

Naturally, I think you should get a K3 if you are in the market for a
high-performance radio.  If you aren't, then you should get two :-)

I hope to see you at Dayton in just under three weeks!

73,

Lyle KK7P

Mike,

I can see your point, but I think the K3 energy will dissipate to a
normal background level before we could even implement such a change.
This has been our experience in the past. If the K3 is the exception,
we could set up a Yahoo group for it.

tnx

Please don't do it! THIS is THE Elecraft list.

What you say is true but I think it ALSO worth noting that at least
two of those three new radios are coming from American firms who are
continuously improving the process of "community". Elecraft is the
premiere pioneer of this methodology and I think the results speak for
themselves. Eric and Wayne created a community around the K2 and most
of us feel that via email we can trade barbs, comments and suggestions
with the end result often being an upgrade, mod, new product, or at
the very least - a well written explanantion as to why "adding a small
internal combustion engine generator to the K2" is probably not such a
great idea...

It's obvious that Wayne and Eric have the talent to engineer and bring
brilliant products to market ... but I think the fact that they
actually use their own products on a regular basis and are so readily
agreeable and accessible to talk about them is not only unique, but
it's the secret "mojo" behind the Elecraft business model.

Besides, it's downright "fun" being part of such a dynamic community!
