How to build an old KSB2 kit?

n7zf
I am building a K2 for a friend who bought it about 10 years ago.  S/N 1988.  I am ready to start on the KSB2 module, but am confused about which documentation to follow.

The KSB2 kit came with a Revision C manual.  The current KSB2 manual is Revision E (plus an errata page).  Aside from the errata page, the differences that I see between the Revision C and E manuals are the crystal filter capacitors and a slightly different crystal frequency.  I could not find a description of the KSB2 crystal filter change in the email archives.

My 7 crystals are marked ECD D 4.91-0195 Korea HO.  The SSB firmware was 1.04 that came with the kit, but I have the 1.08B upgrade.  I also have the PSK-31 upgrade kit for SSB.

Should I order the Revision E capacitors to build this kit or just use the originals?  Do I need different crystals?

My KSB2 circuit board is marked Rev. D.  Is a newer circuit board needed for building with the Revision E manual or is Rev D the current board?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Bob,

I would recommend ordering new crystals - and change the ones in the
base K2 as well if they are the same vintage.
Then decide on the SSB filter bandwidth you want - 2.1, 2.4 or 2.6 kHz.
If you want anything other than the 2.1 kHz bandwidth, then order the
SSBCAPKT from Elecraft.
Build all except the filter capacitors from the manual you have, then if
you ordered the SSBCAPKT, follow the instructions with that kit to place
the proper capacitors.
If you do it as I described above, there should be no concern about the
board level.  There has not been much changed on the KSB2 board since
the beginning.  There were some value changes in the ALC section, and
'way back when', D5 was added.  You have the new ALC values with the PSK
kit, and if there is no D5 on that board, you might want to consider
breaking the trace and adding it - you will have to work from the new
schematic to do that, there are no instructions available.  If you are
not capable of doing that, just forget about D5, it is not critical.

OK, now I understand.  I am recommending to the owner that we get the matched crystals and the newer caps.  The PCB I have does include D5.
tnx, Bob
