Guys,
Can anyone recommend a way to test my new K2 noise blanker? My antenna (260' long dipole) is nearly 200' behind the house, so I'm thinking of loosening feedline connector & turning on a hair dryer nearby. Maybe even use a short random wire antenna for the rx test. Any better suggestions? I'm lucky to live in a rural area with no noise needing blanking...but I couldn't resist maxing out the K2. I'm pretty sure the K2's "not inst" message flashes a subliminal "buy me" message. I could be wrong...but I think the NB is desgned to block out automobile
ignition noise, which comes in real handy when it is in a K2 doing Mobile Operations. You can try it in your car, with the car running and see what kind of difference it makes. 73 ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mike Markowski" <[hidden email]> To: "Elecraft email" <[hidden email]> Sent: Tuesday, June 27, 2006 1:01 PM Subject: [Elecraft] How to test noise blanker > Guys, > > Can anyone recommend a way to test my new K2 noise blanker? The NB was optimized to block out ignition noise from UPS trucks.
Proper testing requires you order more stuff from Elecraft so UPS will return. Actually, it was quite tricky coming up with a circuit to block out the ignition noise from a diesel engine :-) 73! - Keith KD1E - - K2 5411 with no NB - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mike Markowski" > Can anyone recommend a way to test my new K2 noise blanker? hahahhahahahahahaha!
But what about Fed EX?? If it works on their trucks too, then... then... would they be FedUp!? :) Ron, wb1hga Keith wrote: > The NB was optimized to block out ignition noise from UPS trucks. > Proper testing requires you order more stuff from Elecraft so UPS will > return. _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Any better suggestions? ------------------- If you've got a cheap lamp dimmer around that produces a huge buzz when it's set somewhere between full on and off, the NB should kill all that noise very nicely. The hair dryer might do it if it's commutator noise that it generates. The NB is designed to eliminate repetitive, high-amplitude, short duration pulses such as those (and those generated by unshielded auto ignitions). Based on observations after driving many thousands of
kilometers with a transceiver parked on 50.125, a sure fire test of a noise blanker would be to position your receiving antenna near just about any Chrysler minivan that's more than a few years old. I can't explain why just them, but the evidence was too obvious to ignore; they seem to radiate a lot of ignition noise. 73, Ken Alexander VE3HLS --- Ron D'Eau Claire <[hidden email]> wrote: > Mike AB3AP asked: > > Can anyone recommend a way to test my new K2 noise > blanker? I believe there was mention in the past that the K2's NB was optimized to some extent on a VW Transporter (replace with model name used in your market) of vintage I have forgotten. The state of motor vehicle ignition systems in NA must have deteriorated significantly in the past 20 years, as here in maintenance-prevention-not-preventative-maintenance Asia it's not much worse than back there back then & it's other noise (like power) where a NB gets the most use. Or presumably there are a lot of VW-based buggies or other less quiet petrol internal combustion engine powered devices to be encountered in the great NA outdoors nowadays. Remember, there is nothing wrong with the NB - you just need to have the right noise. Perhaps it would be better to call it something else, as NB does imply something of what it will do based on what other rigs' NBs do (unlike AUX I/O ;^). Then there would not need to for the ever repeating defend-the-NB thread here, usually starting with somebody wondering in a post if their recently completed NB works as it doesn't seem to behave as they expected it to (read last sentence of last paragraph again). 73, VR2BrettGraham _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. The simplest way to test the KNB2 is to rub a screwdriver across Q21 - the RF Preamplifier- a metal case transistor which is visible when the K2 top is removed. That will generate the kind of noise that it is supposed to suppress. Search the archives with keywords "q21 noise" and you will find more about this test. Good luck! 73 Sverre LA3ZA http://www.qslnet.de/la3za/ _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
