I fried my N-Gen module

ON4WIX
Hi all

while checking the alignment of my filters I accidentally hit my paddles (I
know, I should disconnect them before doing such stuff...) and I zapped the
N-Gen that was connected to my K2's antenna port.
Most likely I fried the MAR-1 amp. Can anyone tell me where I can find a
replacement chip in Belgium or the Netherlands? I tried a couple of local
electronic parts stores but to no avail.
Thanks for any help

Glenn,

Yes, the N-Gen does not like to see transmitted power at its output!

Check to see if MiniCircuits has any European sources.

Your least cost alternative may be to send a note to
mailto:[hidden email] and ask for a replacement.

Dans Small Parts has a suitable substitute (INA-10386) that I have used, but
he wants $13.50 for international shipping - but if you order other parts it
may be worthwhile.

Sorry to hear of your disaster.  Put the K2 into CW TEST in the future.  But
who am I to talk, I did the same thing only last week (for the 4th or 5th
time).  Fortunately, I have replacements on hand so I was able to recover in
a few minutes after the air cleared from the "AHHH S**T".

Maybe the lesson here is:  "If you're using the ngen, stock a few
spares of the MMIC"  ??

Mark,

I don't think so!  Putting the K2 into CW TEST before attaching the N-Gen is
a wise thing to do.

Since I do use mine more frequently than most (3 or more times a week on a
regular basis), I do keep several spares on hand for whenever I lapse into
forgetfulness.

Yep, been there, got the tee-shirt!  A sniff of RF zaps the MMIC and creates the Homer effect (DOH!).

Murphy's law states that if it can possibly go wrong, it will do so at the most inconvenient moment.  I seem to prove Murphy's law most days HI!

Email Elecraft to get a price, you may be pleasantly surprised.  Their service, friendliness and communication is the best I've ever encountered.  Thanks, guys and gals, take a bow, you're really appreciated!

Thanks to those that sacrificed their NGEN, it's helpful for me to
read that, as I'm building an XG2 at the moment and it will help me
remember to go into TEST mode before connecting it ;)

Here's an idea.

I think I would connect some type BNC cover to the
N-Gen or XG2 with string, and a tag that reminded me
to put the rig in test mode.  Then when I removed the
BNC cap to hook it to the rig, the tag would remind me
to put the rig in test mode, then when removing the
test instrument, the dangling BNC cap would remind me
to put it back on the connector to be set up for the
next time.

There's also the RX ANT jack if you have the 160m option.

Leigh:

That's a brilliant suggestion.  I wish you had posted it before I flamed my
N-Gen.
BTW Elecraft (The Best Radio Company in the World) sent me the replacement
part for free. Pretty impressive as it was obviously my fault.
