IC sockets

wsm-3
Due to a solder bridge on pins 2 and 3 of P2 on the control board of
my K2, I let the smoke out of U6, U7, and U8. U6 is mounted in an
IC socket. Is there any reason other than the cost, for not putting
U7 and U8 in sockets when I replace them?
Thanks
Scott N5SM

RE: IC sockets

Don Wilhelm-3
Scott,

Sockets are not recommended - in the RF paths, they do create additional
impedances that should be avoided, and they do reduce reliability unless
they are air-tight (machine pin type) sockets due to slow oxidation of the
metals.

If you prefer to take your chances, go ahead, but use good sockets (but use
tin pins, not gold)., so the metal matches the legs of the ICs.
