IMHO, and as a previous owner of (2) IC-735's,
and (1) IC-730 - I'd just bite the bullet and send it off to ICOM AMERICAN in the State of Washington, Service Dept. It's old enough now, that I would think it might be best to stay with Icom's Service Dept. and their source of whatever parts they still can get. I think also - they will give you an on-line quote idea - of what you're in store for. And I suspect they'll also tell you what they can't do. One of the issues with ham equipment of recent times, is does it have a
backup battery that might be failing after 7 or more years? That is one of the first things that comes to mind as our equipment ages. With my last IC-735, I recall I did inquire to ICOM
AMERICA, State of Washington, about their replacing the RAM MEMORY BATTERY in my IC-735. If I'm not mistaken, they said they no longer carry it. But there are several outfits who sell memory backup products, for the IC-735. I forget now, but Icom's Service Dept. did tell me what they could and could not fix on a IC-735. There is also an issue with the IC-735's "display capacitors", a replacement need. I think Icom, last year, said they could replace those. I think the brunt of IC-735's were built in the mid to later 80's. So kind of aging a bit now. For the money, a nice little rig, and GC receive too. I had an IC735. On paper it sure looked like a great rig. In practice
I found the sound of the rig to be irritating. Background noise was harsh and spiky for lack of a better word. Recovered audio left me wanting to turn the rig off. GC receive, which I though would be a great thing, turned out to be something I almost never used. I tried to like it, really. I had wanted one for years but found quickly after owning one that it was not gonna hold my interest. As soon as the K2 was up & running, the 735 went up for sale. I'm sure there a lot of happy IC-735 owners out there (notice how I've spelled it 3 different ways in this post? :-) but I'm not one of them. Bob,
I do not have any experience with an IC-735, but I did take on a IC-751 project a couple of years ago. Icom has a fairly good web site where you should be able to download docs, schematics, etc. Also, I called them and for 25 bucks, they sent me a copy of the entire 751 doc library, including all mod sheets and upgrades, in house tech notes, and even fax communications between US and Japan offices. If you choose to change the RAM battery, be careful and follow the correct proceedure. You have to attach an outside power source prior to unsoldering the battery, or the unit will go brain dead. Other common repairs of that time are replacing Electrolytic caps on the power supplies (be aware that Icom uses multiple 8v supplies all over the place). Also, the plastic housed trimmer caps around the bfo tend to go bad. Again, these are all things that I experienced with the 751. It was a pretty good learning experience, but I since gave the radio away to an aspiring cw guy that needed a better receiver than what he had. Unless you are Just heart set on that radio, be careful not to spend too much on it, as the availability of replacement parts of that vintage is getting questionable.
