I think it would be useful to be able to store the "updates" locally, just in case of an unexpected problem. That would allow you to return the K3 to it's previous firmware version for comparison purposes if nothing else... It would also allow those without internet access near their K3 to take the update to the rig on a laptop. Seem to make sense to me. 73 Dave, G4AON K3 ordered 30th April, currently with UPS at East Midlands Airport, expected to arrive Monday (19th Nov) _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I agree, but I wonder if Elecraft are concerned about plagiarism?

The help with the update utility explains how you can update the firmware from files that have been manually downloaded to a USB memory stick or similar. It's no problem at all, as long as you can connect the K3 to a PC that runs Windows. -- Julian, G4ILO K2 s/n: 392 K3 s/n: ??? In fact, you can access the FTP site directly from within the K3
Utility Help screen if you wish - just click on the link (ftp://ftp.elecraft.com/K3/firmware) given in the "Manual File Transfer" help topic. An instance of Windows file explorer should appear (framed within the help screen) displaying the files, and then you may highlight them all, right click and use "Copy to Folder" to put them where you wish. No special FTP client is required in this case, which should work on Windows XP and Vista, but of course the PC must be connected to the internet. I looked at G4ILO, Julian's, site and found there an interesting
discussion of the Plantronics Gamecon 1 for use with the K2. Now this headset is not available down here in Oz as far as I can determine. I am wondering if Julian or anybody else is able to comment upon the Plantronics .Audio 250 which is available down here. The Plantronics site contains almost no specification details, and in a response to a query from me, have replied as follows, "The .Audio 350 is a modern equivalent to the old GameCom 1; the two headsets have comparable specifications however neither of these products are radio headsets. We do not rate our analog PC headsets as compatible with radio consoles. We do not release technical specifications of our retail headsets." Just how comparable is "comparable?" 73 Kevin VK3DAP / ZL2DAP _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I did the same and found the described headset on ebay somewhere in Shanghai at a reasonable price and quick delivery. I built an adapater to the 8 pole Mic connector and tried it with my K2, but the modulation reports I got were not encouraging to use it longer. There is also still a problem with the vox, which is not as responsive as it should be. I helped myself with a PTT in form of a morse key, which does the job better than the VOX. Another problem was sometimes HF in the modulation, which might be a question of correct wiring the adapter to the K2. I went back the the Heil Proset with HC5 element, which gave me the best results here, or the Kenwood MC2s (if I remember the label right) 73! de Werner OE9FWV -- Friends may come and go, but enemies accumulate. Their statment should steer you clear away from
considering the Plantronics Gamecon headset. de Joe, aa4nn SNIP > "The .Audio 350 is a modern equivalent to the old GameCom 1; the two > headsets have comparable specifications however neither of these products > are radio headsets. that statement ( from Plantronics) is so marketing,,,,
The last thing Plantronics wants is to have dispatch centers who pay 160-300 per headset DISCOVER how to integrate mass marketed PC marketed ( read low pricepoint) microphones into their systems. Yes they may be built to endure a tougher environment. . I've very successfully used .99 radio shack electret elements with both my k2 and my 7800...haven't hooked it to the K3 yet,,,,frequently using elements from old telephone sets,, Also Altec branded ( this week owned by Plantronics )computer stuff CAN works great...( I have a headset for my K2.) http://www.alteclansing.com/product_details.asp?pID=AHS515 just needs to be wired properly providing the bias to the electret... there are articles all over the net,.,. I like especially the comment "We do not release technical specifications of our retail headsets."....the spec would look too good,,,, now back to learning the K3,,,, bill Joe-aa4nn wrote: >Their statment should steer you clear away from >considering the Plantronics Gamecon headset. >de Joe, aa4nn > >SNIP >>"The .Audio 350 is a modern equivalent to the old GameCom 1; the >>two headsets have comparable specifications however neither of >>these products are radio headsets. Just my opinion here:
For those who have the 'where-with-all' to build a proper adapter for these PC microphones and headsets, many of them will work just fine - some even great. Besides, they are inexpensive things to experiment with just to see if you can make it work for your use. But if this is your first microphone purchase, I would suggest that you get one that is certain to work and work well, and for Elecraft gear, that to me means one of the Elecraft microphones which are known to plug in an work fine. 73, Don W3FPR Bill NY9H wrote: > The last thing Plantronics wants is to have dispatch centers who pay > 160-300 per headset DISCOVER how to integrate mass marketed PC > marketed ( read low pricepoint) microphones into their systems. I will be using the On-Air Headset from US Interface with my K-3 when the
K-3 arrives http://www.usinterface.com/Headset.html This is the same place that the Navigator digital-mode interface comes from which I believe Simon just purchased for his K-3. The headset-mic is a featherweight dual earpiece headset plus boom noise canceling microphone for $39.95 and comes complete with a Kenwood configured 8-pin connector and breakout connector for PTT. US Interface does publish the specs (see site) and they look pretty good to me. Glen (W3GWW) promptly filled my order and was nice about it. He uses his on his K-2. To all those kind folks who contributed on this topic:
I have decided not to proceed with a Plantronics product on account of their unwillingness to supply me with specifications. I do not quibble with their right to market their products in any way they see fit. However, I hope that they do not quibble with my decision taken as a consequence. Incidentally, I do have an Elecraft / Heil MH2 hand-held mic, and I get excellent reports when using it. I am looking at the product on http://www.usinterface.com/default.asp, and will probably buy it, but have decided that in the meantime I will put Heil HC4 and HC5 inserts into a venerable Shure 444 microphone body together with a selector switch and transistor amplifier - probably using the circuit on the Elecraft site. That, and the QRP charger from A & A Engineering rather uses up this month's allowance! Best 73 to all and especially to the growing number of happy K3 assemblers. Please make sure you all debug it thoroughly so that I can place my order. Years in the IT industry have made me wary of being an early adopter of anything! > I am looking at the product on http://www.usinterface.com/default.asp, > and will probably buy it, Before you do, take a look at the Koss SB40, SB45, and SB49 headsets (www.koss.com). They are full over the ear headsets with electret mics sold primarily for on-line gaming. However, at $40.00 direct they are a very interesting possibility for radio work. 73, ...
