Thanks, you've answered my questions.
Regarding the application, I occasionally participate in FMT exercises/competitions and have always done pretty well (within 75 milliHertz) with nothing but on-air references like WWV, lots of FFT averaging, and linear interpolation of VFO error. Since the FMT pursuit is occasional, I don't want to invest too much to get the desired result since I still have to obtain a Trimble Thunderbolt or similar GPSDO 10 MHz reference.
