Just joined this list - 5B4AZ

Neoklis Kyriazis
Hi

I have just joint the elecraft mailing list as I am interested in the K3. However I am a Linux user, and as such always have problems with (not) available software from vendors of most equipment for Ham Radio, among other things.

I have already sent a couple of emails to K3 support but so far no reply. I would like to know if it is possible to do firmware upgrade in Linux somehow, as the Elecraft utility programs will not run on my 64-bit Arch Linux platform. I can write software for Linux but I need the interface API to do this, I wonder if Elecraft would supply whatever info is needed to write a simple program to update firmware.

Anyone using a K3 with a Linux box?

73's  Nick 5B4AZ

Hello Nick and welcome to the Elecraft list.

Yes, the K3 utility is certainly available for Linux and you can get it
at

http://www.elecraft.com/K3/software/k3utility_1_4_1_8.tgz

I cannot claim to be a user of Linux myself, but you might like to give
the above program a go.

Neoklis Kyriazis
Thanks, David

I have already tried it but it will not work on my box, as it is an old binary and will not run on a new Linux platform. Still, I was hoping for a reply from Elecraft, but perhaps they are on their vacation.

OK, Nick.  Eric has mentioned that Gary was off work yesterday but is
back today (US time).  Gary is the Elecraft Support guy so you should be
hearing from him later today.  You'll find him very helpful.

Hi Neoklis,

The binary I downloaded from Elecraft works just fine on my Linux netbook,
running Ubuntu 11.04, there wasn't any problems either before or after I
upgraded from 10.10, so I don't know why it doesn't work for you. What
output do you get - maybe there are some library packages you need to
install.

Re: Just joined this list - 5B4AZ

Neoklis Kyriazis
Hi Thomas

The problem is that I have installed a 64-bit only Arch Linux X86-64 distro and the utility is 32-bit. If necessary I beleive I can install multilib, which could give me 32-bit compatibility so the utility can run. I will try later after I finish some upgrade work on some of my Ham radio Linux software (upgrading from OSS to ALSA sound API). I beleive I will need 32-bit compatibility for Skype also.

Hi Neoklis,

Installing the 32-bit compatibility libraries (ia32-libs) should solve the problem with 64-bit Linux. I expect you will find many Linux apps will require the 32-bit libraries.

Thanks, David

I also feel this is the problem, as you say some apps also need 32 bit support, notably Skype. But it would be nice to recompile the utility on an X86_64 platform, as this is now becoming the common platform.

Neoklis,
I use 64bit ubuntu (the last LTS, though, not the most recent
one), and the K3util works fine. The only thing that doesn't work is the
help tool of the k3util, some library is missing/confused.

The other apps offered by Elecraft instead are windows only. No way of
running the memory editor in wine. I'm told some of the other tools
(e.g. the one to upgrade the firmware to the 2m internal transverter)
are windows only too.

I was advised to install the libgtkhtml package to enable the help
functionality.  It does not seem to matter that it is at version 3.32 in
Debian Sid, it still works.

Yes, unfortunately that is true.  It's too bad that the memory editing
commands used by the memory editor have not been released so an
equivalent program could be written for other platforms.  Unfortunately,
the Linux user must still have a Windows crutch lying around to enjoy
the K3 to its fullest.  Sigh...

I can understand the feeling. I just bought an HP P1102w printer that was
on discount offer - now I am struggling to get it to work in Linux...

Well, this is were I can't understand so many manufacturers, wanting to hide
the communication protocol of their products. It discloses little of the internal
functioning and it prevents the Linux community trying to fill the gap in the
(not) available drivers/utilities....

The commands are in the programmers manual. See MC, FA, MD for the basics.

There is not enough "magic" in those commands to set a memory
channel--FA/FB sets VFO frequency, MD sets mode, MC recalls memory
channel.  Nothing in that set of commands writes a memory channel nor
manipulates the text string that can be stored with a memory channel
from the memory editor.  So far I have not been able to divine how to
set a memory channel from the programmers reference.  I will admit to
being somewhat dense at times, so a short tutorial would be welcome.

Re: Just joined this list - 5B4AZ

Nate -

I can't find anything about the text string either.

But a memory can still be set.

Select the memory channel with an MC - MC027;
Set the freq with an FA - FA00010141000;
Set the mode with MD - MD3;
Tap the V>M switch twice - SWT15;SWT15; Look for the table of switch numbers under
the heading SWT/SWH * (Switch Emulation; SET only) in the programmers manual.

And Robert's your father's sibling :-)
