K-1 vs KX-1

David F. Reed
I am interested in your opinions on the differences between the K-1 and
KX-1 transceivers, beyond the band coverage issues; for example, which
has the better receiver?  What makes it that for you?

Anyone that has had both care to comment?

Just one?  Bought when both were available? Reasons?

many thanks for indulging this request.

It depends a lot on what you are going to use it for! I have both (well all
3 - K-1, KX-1 and K-2). For performance you cannot beat the K-2 of course.
Between the K-1 and KX-1 I do like the no drift synthesizer of the KX-1 and
its variable selectivity. The speaker on the K-1 is nice, as is the
capability for 80 M. I just put together a ATS-3, it has some nice qualities
too.

It was a tough choice, but here's basically what made me pick the K1:

1. More traditional look.
2. I day pack and tent camp, so the K1 size was not a factor.
3. A little more power.
4. Larger size meant more features with their own buttons instead of buried
in menu layers.
5. The K1 is about as compact as I care to have a radio and still want to
work on it.
6. It works well as a second radio next to the K2.

Notice there is really nothing about differences in performance. On paper,
the differences didn't have anything to do with my decision. The radios seem
to perform nearly the same.

Flip a coin. No matter which one you buy, there will be times when you will
say, gee, I wish I had bought the other one and other times when you are
happy you made the decision you did.

Or buy both. Maybe some day...

Dave,

Here's one op's opinions.

I have them both and they're both great rigs. The K1 is more traditional and
makes a fine rig in the shack. The KX1 is better set up for portable and
field ops with its top mounted controls and attached paddle. If I had to
rank performance, I'd give the nod to the K1 for a slight advantage, but the
KX1 is more useful and flexible. It's a real toss up, but if I had to pick
one, I'd keep my KX1.

Here are some of the differences between the two:

                     K1                               KX1
Tuning Range  Limited to ~80KHz of band           full band

Tuning Speed  Fixed                               three step sizes

Tuning Lock   No                                  Yes

RF Atten      1 step                              variable

Filters       3 set widths (200-850)              variable (wide-narrow)

NB            Option                              No

Speaker       Yes                                 No (need headphones)

Display       LCD (NO backlight)                  LED (variable brightness)

Work Light    No                                  Yes (inspired!)

Size          Small                               Tiny (espionage size)

Cross Mode    No                                  Yes (and really useful)

SWL coverage  No                                  Yes (better w/ 30m option)

GeeWhiz       Lots                                More

Whatever you decide, you'll have a great little radio. Do get the ATU. It
makes either radio much more convenient to use.

Good Luck es 72,
Lonnie NY2LJ

David :

I would say that the K1 receiver has a performance advantage
over the KX1.

If you are trying to decide which of the two to buy (tough decision,
that's why I own both) I would suggest that you think
about how you plan to use the rig.

If you are looking for something that will primarily be operated
portable, in the
field from park benches, at the beach maybe in the car etc, then
the KX1 is hard to beat. My whole station including a 2ahr external
gel cell and folding 5w solar panel fits into a small satchel-type bag.
I often operate mine Pedestrian mobile, carrying the rig in one hand.

If you plan to use the rig mostly at home, but will occasionally take it
out to the park for an outing, or if you plan to operate 50:50 then
perhaps the K1 is a better choice, because of the form factor, internal
speaker etc.

As someone else has mentioned, with either rig be sure to buy the ATU.
Both the KAT1 and KXAT1 perform extremely well and are very convenient
when operating both from home and in the field. Not having to drag along
extra cables and an external tuner makes setup a lot simpler and your
antenna
can just be a couple of pieces of wire thrown up into a tree.

In either case you can't go wrong. Both rigs work extremely well and I
am sure
that you will be pleased with either rig.
