I'm still in the CW wannabe realm (must be committed if I'm building a K1
<grin>). Two VFO ranges are possible with supplied capacitors: 80 kHz and 150 kHz. 150 kHz would cover the CW portions of either band, but I think that the lower 80 kHz is where the CW is for the most part. Is there a reason to go the full 150 kHz? What is gained by using the 80 kHz vs. the 150 kHz? Is the K1 used for digital modes? So much to learn, so little time! Thanks. Rich,
Both 80 and 150 kHz have their adherents. 80 kHz will give you tuning that's less touchy, though I've never had trouble with 150 kHz, even without the "felt mod." The wider band will let you hear WWV on 10 MHz and get you into some less crowded frequencies -- especially helpful when there's a big contest on, for example. You can't go "wrong" either way, I don't think. You might search the archives for "K1 tuning range" for more opinions. AFAIK, CW is the only digital mode supported by the K1. Good luck. I had my K1 originally setup for 80 khz. I redid it for 150 khz. It
actually covers about 170 khz now! It does get a bit touchy, but still very nice. I have since replaced my ten turn pot (tuning control) with the metal shafted one and it is MUCH better. The plastic shafted one was "OK" but got a bit sloppy after a couple of years of use. If you plan to use the rig as a primary rig, I'd say install the metal shafted pot from the get-go! They are under $20 shipped from Mouser as I remember. There is also a "mod" to restrict the range of the "RIT tuning" as it is VERY touchy to set in a sharp bandpass mode. It's just a matter of shunting the RIT pot with a resistor. Forget what value now. 73, Sandy W5TVW ----- Original Message ----- From: "Scott Richardson" <[hidden email]> To: "Richard Hill" <[hidden email]>; "Elecraft Reflector" <[hidden email]> Sent: Saturday, June 09, 2007 6:20 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] {K1 2277] VFO Alignment--VFO Range selection, 40m, 20m. > Rich, > > Both 80 and 150 kHz have their adherents. 80 kHz will give you tuning > that's less touchy, though I've never had trouble with 150 kHz, even > without the "felt mod." When is a downloadable K3 manual expected?

The manual is not likely to be available until production radios begin to
ship. This is necessary so the manual can acurately include any firmware changes and feature updates between now and then. We want the manual to match the K3 at time of shipment. 73 Greg AB7R -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]]On Behalf Of Edward Dickinson III Sent: Sunday, June 10, 2007 1:18 PM To: 'Elecraft Reflector' Subject: [Elecraft] K3 Manaul When is a downloadable K3 manual expected? I installed the metal shaft ten turn pot at build time. It has a nicer feel. 17 khz per turn is not bad. I changed to a K2 knob and like that better, also. It was necessary to ream the knob hole to 1/4 inch from 6mm. The K1 knob went on another rig. 73 Rick Dettinger K7MW _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
