I have a K1 with a 40/20 filter board. The receiver is much louder on 40. The signals just jump out with plenty of audio. On 20 the signals are not as strong. Every once in while I will hear a strong signal on 20.
I suspect that 20 is just not as loud. I have made contacts on 20 to include England. When I do a A/B receiver test with my Yaesu FT-450D, it seems like they are in line. Should I assume this is related to the bands being different. Still saving for my K2.. carrot estended slightly with the 40 dollar increase.. I will get there Thanks 73 k4YND Don |
Don,
Unless you do an A/B test using the same antenna for 20 meters and a similar transceiver, it is difficult to make any valid judgement. Yes, 40 and 20 have very different characteristics, and vary themselves a lot from day to night - it is all in the propagation conditions at the time. A low level signal generator such as the Elecraft XG2 or XG3 can be used to do an MDS measurement on each band - that will give you the real information you seek, but I do not know of another valid method other than the A/B comparison. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/3/2011 3:44 PM, Don Baucom wrote: > I have a K1 with a 40/20 filter board. During K1 alignment, all of the adjustments made on the RF board to peak the receiver are repeated when transmitter alignment is subsequently performed. The transmitter adjustments are far more critical than the same adjustments made for the receiver. If you test the maximum power output of your K1 and it is in the 5 to 7 watt range on both bands, you can be pretty certain that your alignment is fine and it is just band or local conditions responsible for the difference. OTOH, you can have perfectly wonderful receiver sensitivity yet poor transmitter output, due to the wide adjustment tolerance of the receiver compared to the very narrow adjustment tolerance of the transmitter. So...check the maximum output power levels on each band to rest your concerns.
