K1 No power out on 2 of 4 bands

K Price
I have the 4 band board with 40, 30, 20 & 17 meters selected. I have re-checked all capacitors and re-counted every turn on everything.  It appears that I have a good solder connection on L1 - L6.  I can receive signals on all 4 bands.  I get 5 watts out on 40 and 30 meters.  I get "zero" or "P0.1" when I try 20 and 17 meters.

Any suggestions?

Thanks again,
Keith

Re: K1 No power out on 2 of 4 bands

Don,

Thanks for your reply.  Initially I had used a second receiver to align the K1.  But it appeared that my trimmers were more than 20 degrees off.  So based upon your suggestion I reset them and re-peaked.  That did the trick!  I am now getting approx 5 watts out on all 4 bands!!!

I managed a quick QSO on 40 meters last night before another station clobbered my 4 watts.  But at least I know it is working.

I have two more issues that I need to track down.  One is that when I touch the top of the K1 case that the volume gets louder on 20 and 17 meters.  No change in volume on 30 and 40 meters.

The other is that my receive range is lower than I want across the 4 bands.
40:  6.984 - 7.084
30: 10.078 - 10.179
20: 13.978 - 14.078
17: 18.028 - 18.128
Is there any way to shift it?

I am sure I have other things to tweek.  For instance, I need to get a closer transmit/receive signal.  Just thrilled that something I built is working!  Thanks for all your help.

Re: K1 No power out on 2 of 4 bands

Kieth,

Glad to hear you have it working.

If your reception gets louder by just gently touching the top of the
case, I would look for a problem in your antenna system - likely a
broken shield connection in the coax.  OTOH, if it takes a solid tap to
change the volume, I would look for the unsoldered (or badly soldered)
connection in the K1.  If you are absolutely certain it does not happen
on 40 and 30, then the bad connection would likely be found on the 4
band board.

As far as the frequency coverage, re-do the VCO adjustment
(spread/squeeze the turns of L1), and place the VFO frequency as close
to 3090 kHz as possible - but not below that frequency (that condition
must be satisfied *after* you tighten the nylon screw).  You may be able
to achieve the proper adjustment simply by moving the last turn of wire
without loosening the L1 mounting hardware.

Don,

Wow you are good!  I changed antenna's and the change in volume went away.  So I guess I now need to check out that 20 meter dipole (hi hi).

I was able to move the wires around on L1 and now have the following (thank you).
40:  6.999 to 7.099
30:  10.093 to 10.193
20:  13.993 to 14.093
17:  18.042 to 18.142

I am going to put the cover on it and try it out on the bands.  Hopefully everything is working and I will learn how to use this great radio.  I really appreciate all your help.

k1 #2793 is on the air in Memphis!
