K1 and ATU problem

When I connected a random wire antenna and counterpoise to my K1 using a Male BNC to dual binding posts the ATU would not bring the SWR down. It showed r9.9.  I tried different lengths of wire without results.  The ATU works fine with coax and a vertical.  Any suggestions will be appreciated.  Thanks and 73, K4QQ
