K1 and its ATU

John Gabbard
I am thinking of ordering the ATU for my K1 and I would like to know if
there is an easy loading length of wire for 80-10 mtrs.? I paln to use a
single wire 67' in length with an insulated radial off the rear panel of the
K1. Does anyone have any comments on that?
                  Thanks, John   KF7OM

John the secret is that you need to stay away from wire lengths that
are close to multiples of 1/2 wavelength on the amateur bands as
these lengths will pose a high impedance that may be difficult for
the KAT1 to match.

Luckly someone has already figured out what these "magic"
wire lengths are.

Alan Chester (G3CCB SK) recommended a 26.5 meter wire (86.94 ft)
for all band operation in his article "Taming the End-Fed Wire".

One other option is to try the W3EDP which is an 84ft wire with a
17ft elevated counterpoise for the low bands  and 6.5ft long
  counterpoise for 20M.  See http://www.g3ycc.karoo.net/w3edp.htm

So something in the 84 to 87 ft range should load nicely on all
bands.

P.S. Interestingly enough the 24 to 28 ft wire that Elecraft recommends
for the KX1 shows up on G3CCBs chart as a good length for matching on
40M, 30M and 20M.
