K1 - low resistance measurement on front panel board

Mike Clarke-3
Hi all,

I'm in the process of building my first Elecraft rig (and first ever
radio project); a K1.

I've reached the stage of doing the resistance checks on the front panel board,
one of which my K1 is failing.

J1 pin 16 to ground should be between 15 and 18kOhms; but I am
measuring about 8k.

I have tried:

a) inspecting the board visually, and can't see any obvious bridges or
bad joints;
b) measuring R7 in circuit - 3.45kOhms
c) measuring R6 in circuit - 7.76kOhms
d) measuring R6 out of circuit - 12.8kOhms

Any suggestions as to what I've done wrong would be most appreciated!

Thanks,

Re: K1 - low resistance measurement on front panel board

Mike,

Remove the microprocessor from its socket and measure the resistance.
If there is a substantial increase in resistance, that is an indication
that the DVM/ATTN input to the microprocessor has been damaged (likely
by static).
If there is no change with the microprocessor removed, the only other
component could be the regulator (U4).  Be certain it is oriented
correctly, and as a last resort, remove it and test the resistance
again.  This is another part that can be damaged by a static charge.
