For a portable "station in a box", I have used an "SKB"
brand rack mount box with front and back covers that are
removed for station operation. The front of the rack mount
case has aluminum rack pieces with gear neatly mounted, and
is usually a good conversation piece during our Radio
Scouting displays.
As cool as it looks, and as nice as it functions, it has the
following gear mounted in it:
Icom IC-706MKIIG, MFJ Matching Network, Icom IC-8500 VHF
rig, Rigblaster Pro, Palomar "Tuner-Tuner" Front-firing
speaker
Inside is an Astron 30 amp power supply, with power
distributed through Anderson connectors.

off the list, and I'll send you a photo.

I am planning on keeping the 706 system, but also building
another similar system with a K2/100, and a KAT2 tuner. I
will likely not have include 2m rig like the other setup,
but I also may possibly install a K50XV transverter for 6
meters.
I would like to get everyone's opinion about having the K2
mounted from the backside of a panel, where all of the
cooling fins will be inside the cabinet, and although the
entire back of the cabinet will be open during operation,
the front will be completely covered by aluminum panels.
My thought is that I could include vents on the front panel
just above the K2 and mount at least one boxer fan in such a
way that it pulls air through the front panel vents over the
K2's fins and then "exhaust" out the back of the cabinet. I
don't currently have problems with the 706 overheating, but
its fan does come on frequently during heavy-use events such
as Field Day.
The main question is, do the cooling fins on the K2/100
provide lots of redundent heat dissipation, or do they tend
to be borderline, especially in situations where they may
not be surrounded by lots of "free air."
