K2/100 for Emcomm Use?

John Pfeifer-2
Hello all,

I just completed the ARRL Emergency Communications course and it started me
thinking more seriously about emcomm.

I searched through the list archives and couldn't find any comments about
using the K2/100 for emcomm HF work.

It seems it would make a good HF emcomm rig.  Compact, low current draw during
receive, etc.

I would like to hear comments from anyone out there using a K2/100 as part of
an emcomm "go kit" or for portable or fixed emergency communications.

Thanks,

John Pfeifer - KL0WN

John,
It would be perfect for a mobile or to the field shelter rig.  you would use
it with low doublets for NVIS propagation, (straight up).

NVIS is a very viable HF technique for around the state communications.

In addition to the K2/100's low current drain, it has the advantage of
a second, lower-current DC input that can be used with a small gel-cell
(that is, the regular K2 DC input jack). If you have a battery
connected here, and the 20-amp supply plugged into the APP connector
goes down, the K2/100 will drop into bypass mode and continue to
operate at the 10 to 15 watt level. It won't even drop out of TX mode
-- the station at the other end will simply hear a 10 dB drop in power
output.

This should be great for emergency applications.
