K2/100 transmitting into a short!

syd smith

Yep ... I did it.  Now when TUNE the max actual power is 1 regardless of requested power and after about 4 seconds, it trips out of TUNE.  Have found R28 in the SWR bridge had opened up but still have the problem.  I suspect that many others have pulled this trick and I would appreciate any comments.  Syd - WB4W

Syd,

The best way to attack a problem like that is to determine what is
working and what is not.  I suggest the following procedure (sll while
driving a dummy load:
1) Test the power output and power control of the base K2 - power via
the coaxial power jack on the lower rear panel wither the KPA100
completely removed.  If OK, then the base K2 is working and you can move
on to the next step.
2) Connect the KPA100 cables, but do not power the KPA100 (no cable in
the APP connector).  It is also helpful at this point to connect an
external wattmeter between the KPA100 antenna jack and the dummy load.
This tests the wattmeter function in the KPA100 - do the same as you did
for the base K2 alone.  If you cannot control power or the power
indication is wildly different than the external wattmeter, then the
wattmeter section of the KPA100 needs work.
3) Connect power to the KPA100 and again test the power output using
TUNE and TUNE-DISPLAY.

These steps should reveal what needs to be examined in detail.
