K2/100 whats the min power and what current drain?

m0bmn
Hi All

I only have a QRP K2 but just would like to know what the min power a K2/100
will run at with the power know turned down ,

and what current does it draw at low power compared to the barefoot K2?

Thanks

Paul

Paul asked:

-------------------------

When you turn the POWER below 10 watts the KPA100 is automatically switched
out of the circuit, so it's just a "barefoot" QRP K2 at those power levels.

If you're providing 13 VDC only to the high-current power connector on the
KPA100, it'll draw between 200 and 400 mA even when it's not being used.

If you want, you can power the K2 QRP circuits through the small power
connector on the back of the K2 and power the KPA100 separately through its
high-current Anderson connector. If you do that, when you remove power from
the Anderson connector the current drain to the K2 is the same as any "QRP
K2". You'll get a warning on the K2 display that you don't have amplifier
power. To switch to QRO mode all you need to do is furnish 13 vdc to the
Anderson connector on the KPA100.

The system is designed to work FB that way with two power supplies.

Paul,

The low power setting remains the same - when the KPA100 is not powered (but
the base K2 is through a separate power supply), the QRP K2 will operate
just the same as if the KPA100 is not attached, but if the KPA100 is powered
on, th K2 power control will increment in steps of 0.5 watts instead of the
0.1 watt steps - up to the 10 watt level - the KPA100 kicks in at 11 watts
and then the increment is in 1 watt steps.

The receive current on my fully loaded K2 is 0.34 Amps with the KPA100
disconnected, increases to  0.44 to 0.46 amps with the KPA100 attached and
not powered, and goes up to 0.50 Amps with the KPA100 powered on.  The
receive current does not vary with the power setting.

RE: K2/100 whats the min power and what current drain?

Ron D'Eau Claire-2
I don't' see the message here, but Jack, W6FB, e-mailed me off-list that the
parasitic drain continues from the low-current supply as long as the KPA100
is installed. Only the PA transistors get current only from the high-current
connector. That sounds like what you're saying Don.

I  thought the whole KPA100 was isolated by the diodes when the only power
was coming from the low-current 13 vdc connector on the K2.

That's the value of posting to the list with everyone watching!  Thanks for
catching my error.

Yes, the birdie-generator (oops, bias oscillator) which provides high
voltage for the diode T/R switch and -12v for the RS232 port must run
even if the KPA100 is inactive.  It gets its power through the 12CTRL
line which is in the ribbon cable.

RE: K2/100 whats the min power and what current drain?

Don Wilhelm-3
In addition to the circuit elements that Vic pointed out, the KPA100 LPF
relays (they are not latching) must be held in the active state for the
current band, and that takes a bit of the current too (from the 12CTRL line
which originates in the base K2).
