K2 #4039 Headphone Socket - Replacement needed, UK supplier?

Nicolas Pike
Hi,

I wonder if anyone can suggest a UK supplier for the K2’s headphone
socket. Mine no longer switches the internal speaker on and sometimes
makes a poor connection to the headphones. Close internal inspection
revealed that one of the plastic lugs on the “rear switch” had broken
away. So the headphone socket was no longer sliding the rear switch
across.
I have tried Maplin’s and RS, I could find the correct basic socket but
not one with the rear switch.

Thanks!!!

Regards
Nicolas

Re: K2 #4039 Headphone Socket - Replacement needed, UK supplier?

Morning Nicolas,

I had exactly the same fault. Searched high and low in the UK and the rest
of Europe for a replacement with the switch but no luck. So I finally had to
order one from Elecraft. The cost of shipping was a heck of a lot more than
the cost of the headphone socket, and I wish now that I had ordered two or
three as it is a bit flimsy.  I received it within a few days with Lisa's
help.

Hope that this helps,

73,

Geoff      GM4ESD

Nicolas:

I have had two K2's sent to me for replacement of the headphone jack and on
both units I found that they were not soldered properly.  They both had
worked for several months and then became intermittent.  I soldered the
connections again and let the solder flow into the connections and both of
the units no longer had a problem with the jack not working.  The leads out
of the socket are not long enough to extend out on the bottom side of the
board so installing the jack requires that you take a little longer to
solder each connection so that the solder will wick down to the jack pin.
You might try reheating the connections on the bottom of the board and add
solder to let it flow into the connection.  My K2 is serial number 18 and
the jack still functions fine.
