Ah, another evening of soldering. I finally got #4913's
KNB2 noise blanker. I was not expecting much in the
way of performance but with persistant S6 static from
a nearby 12,200 volt power line, I was willing to try.
One note about construction - the 2 glass diodes are
FRAGILE! I broke two just by gently bending the leads
90 degrees with my fingertip. Fortunatley, a local
electronics store carried replacements.
Now, on to performance - I tuned to WWV (loud) and
kicked in NB2 @ Low Threshold to check for distortion
products. They were so weak I'd either have to be
listening for them or be using headphones. Nice!
Next, I found a quiet band (10m) and sure enough,
there was the static, S6 from the power lines. I kicked
in NB1 @ high threshold and the noise dropped out
so much that I thought the noise had stopped. It was
like I had unplugged the antenna!
I wish some car would idle under my antennas - just
so I could enjoy totally killing the interferance with a
tap on the NB button. On it went, with me turning the
noise blanker on & off again and again because I
thought my ears were playing tricks on me - that's
how good the KNB2 works.
Best $39 I ever spent - thanks Elecraft!
