K2 # 5422 Control Board Problems?

Fred (FL)
Hi Elecraft K2 Experts  :)

I've started building K2 # 5422, and have finished
Control Board.

Couple of dumb questions - might keep my "ship" on
course:

1.  What is "numbering convention" of standard IC
packages - starting
with Pin 1 - does numbering go down that side and wrap
back on other
side, back to pin across from Pin 1?  (I know this is
basic, but .....)

2.  What is the "lettering convention" of standard
TO-92
transistor packages - from front flat side?
(collector,
base, etc.)

3. Measuring all the ohmeter resistance checks at the
end of Control
Board section - I'm getting some resistance readings
much less than
manual's table values?  (I'm using an analog meter VM)

I might try to send Control Board (# 5422) back to
Elecraft's support
desk, for a checkup of this first board - for peace of
mind.

It took 4 days, part time, to build Control Board.  It
"Looks" good.

Fred,

First, keep resistance readings made with an analog ohmmeter far away from
IC devices.  The voltages used can turn on (saturate) circuits and not only
cause incorrect/misleading readings, but in some cases could damage solid
state devices.  Even the inexpensive DMMs will provide good readings for
you, and these range from the less than $10 DMMs from places like Harbor
Freight Tools to expensive models - the inexpensive models are much slower
to settle the reading and often have limited ranges, but they are adequate
for the basic tasks.

Your questions on device bases (how the pins are numbered) can be best
answered by referring you to basing diagrams.  While ICs follow a standard
convention, transistors vary in their basing designation.  Look at the first
sheet of the schematics in Appendix B of the K2 manual to see the basing
diagrams for devices used in the K2.

I'd think you'd do better to buy a DMM rather than sending the board to
Elecraft.  Spend the same $ on tools rather than services.  The DMM
would be useful for the rest of the kit and you'll learn a bit more.
