In nineteen seventy something, I passed a ham radio exam for the first
time. I never got a station put together, and so never got on the air. In nineteen eighty something, I passed the test again. But once again I didn't get a station and never got on the air. This time, I built the station _first_, then got licensed. About a month ago I finished K2 #7150, with the aid of great instructions, Elecraft's fine support, the archive of this mailing list, and all of your generous help. Oh, and the Optivisor. I spent weeks wearing the Optivisor. Saturday, dad and I each passed both the technician and general exams. Our callsigns have just been assigned (they're even sequential). I'm going to drop by the ham store on the way home and pick up a log book. I know I'm not required to log my contacts, but having dad's callsign as my first log entry... how can I not do that? This has been a long time coming. Thanks for all of your help in making it happen. 73, Wayne Conrad KF7QGA ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Hello George,
Congratulation to your ham family. I managed to get my son to obtain his licence at the age of 16. After he got his licence, he seldom touched on the radio and in fact has spent most of his time in internet e.g. facebook, MSN etc. It is now really difficult to get new blood into this hobby. K2 is the only capable rig which can be soldered and built. If looking for through hole soldering fun, K2 could be the only choice. Excellent short story! Thanks for sharing. And congrats on your K2.
I have an Optivisor here, and now how much it helps. Now - if I could get my 80-y/o dad to try something new.... Just between you, me, and the list, our ages are very similar. 73, matt (first license, 1972) W6NIA On Wed, 08 Jun 2011 15:23:45 -0700, you wrote: >In nineteen seventy something, I passed a ham radio exam for the first >time. Matt,
I'll reply publicly to say how proud I am of my dad for learning ham radio and Morse code at 70. He aced the technician test, and beat my scores on both tests. That's David Conrad, KF7QGB, a man with sand. 73, Wayne Conrad KF7QGA On 06/08/2011 10:25 PM, Matt Zilmer wrote: > Now - if I could get my 80-y/o dad to try something new.... ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

I think most of us would strongly urge you to get started immediately with computer-based logging software. Nowadays, most hams have a computer sitting next to our radio, and enter contacts as we go. There are several good options that are free, full featured, and easy to use. Since getting back on the air in 2003, I've used DXKeeper, which is free, bug-free, and well supported. It's for the Windoze platform. If you live in the Mac world, I'm confident that others can suggest an option for you. 73, Jim K9YC ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

The standard of comparison for OS-X logging software is MacLogger DX by Don Agro, VE3VRW of Dog Park Software. MacLogger DX is not free but it is well supported, updated regularly, bug free, reasonably priced for its capability and performance, supports the K2/K3 and greatly outstrips any other logging option for OS-X.
