Hi Everyone,
I'm just in the process of building my first Elecraft kit (a K2, #5294). Construction was going really well, but when I went to perform the Audio Amp. & Tone Generator Test on page 46 of the manual, I could not get any audio output from the radio at all. I've tried a couple of different sets of headphones, with no joy. I've checked the control board thoroughly for shorts, unsoldered componets etc. and cannot find anything amiss. I've also double checked the components around U9, including R16, R17, R20, Q6, Q7 & C25 to C30, all of which are OK. Aside from the lack of audio output, everything else seems to work fine. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I might have done wrong? Ken,
First thing to check is the voltage at U9 pin 7 - it should be about the same as your power supply voltage. If that is OK, check continuity from pin 6 of U9 to the + side of C29 and measure the resistance from the negative side of C29 to the headphone jack (you can do that by removing the front panel - leaving the Control Board attached to the RF Board) - plug the stereo plug shipped with your K2 (remove the cover) into the headphone jack and measure to the solder terminals for both tip and ring - you should read 83 ohms for both. Check the soldering at the connectors between the boards as well as at all associated components. If all the above checks out and you still cannot hear audio, send us another note. 73, Don W3FPR > -----Original Message----- > > Hi Everyone, > > I'm just in the process of building my first Elecraft kit (a K2, > #5294). Just wanted to let everyone know that thanks to Don's helpful hints,
the problem has been found (yours truly forgot to install a couple of components!), and K2 #5294's audio problem is fixed. Onwards to the next stage of construction! 73 Ken, G0RVH On 18 Feb 2006, at 17:37, Don Wilhelm wrote: > Ken, > > First thing to check is the voltage at U9 pin 7 - it should be > about the > same as your power supply voltage. > If that is OK, check continuity from pin 6 of U9 to the + side of > C29 and > measure the resistance from the negative side of C29 to the > headphone jack > (you can do that by removing the front panel - leaving the Control > Board > attached to the RF Board) - plug the stereo plug shipped with your K2 > (remove the cover) into the headphone jack and measure to the solder > terminals for both tip and ring - you should read 83 ohms for both. > > Check the soldering at the connectors between the boards as well as > at all > associated components. > > If all the above checks out and you still cannot hear audio, send > us another > note. > > 73, > Don W3FPR > >> -----Original Message----- >> >> Hi Everyone, >> >> I'm just in the process of building my first Elecraft kit (a K2, >> #5294).
